VARIANTS GALLERY 1

| Busse Variants are custom production knives from
a customer's request or from Jerry's mind. Anyway you look at them,
Variants are AWESOME looking knives! These photos might be the closest
some of us will ever get to a Variant let alone handle one. |

"This thing is a freak of nature. . . .a fusion
of everything angry, disgruntled, and rabid. It foams at
the mouth. . . .I'll be glad when it's out of here.
There's no way to describe the "Flying Mojo"
without seeing it. It is beyond frightening. This has
got to be one of the meanest, baddest, most terrifying Variants
to ever come out of the Busse Custom Shop.
The Flying Mojo has a full length blade, sharpened clip,
recessed spine behind clip for clearance issues, Flying
Tiger teeth, recurved cutting edge, Flying Tiger handle,
and pronounced skull crusher. It is one of the most blood
thirsty blades I have ever handled. . . literally.. . .
.It is hungry. . . really hungry. . . this thing is not
to be believed. . . I don't think the sheath is safe!
Ed, I hope you're not too attached to your fingers.
You're gonna love this thing."

V8 - Slag's Steel Heart II Clip Point Variant with asymmetrical
edge and Hi-Desert tactical low-ride sheath. The knife is crinkle
coated and the micarta is diagonally grooved, though it is not
as thick as the current diamond quilted (more contoured). A
"D" guard is attached to the handle which adds additional
security on heavy chopping.

V15 - 2002 Indy 1500 show. This sample blade (Unfinished) sports
a combo grind on a 3/16th thick Steel Heart E. It's a flat grind
on the primary bevel and a sharpened deep dish hollow along
the spine. It's the best of both worlds.

V16 - 2002 Indy 1500 show. 3/16" thick. Steel Heart E
Variant. Deep dish hollow grind on spine with serrations. Flat
ground primary bevel.

V21 - 2002 Indy 1500 show. Whatta you get when you breed a
straight handled Steel Heart with a Mojo and make it into a
Variant????? hmmmmmm. . . .. I don't know either, but this is
what it looks like. Jerry Busse

V25 - Pepper Shaker Variant
Although the "Pepper Shaker" looks somewhat
similar to the traditional Assault Shaker, it is a much
different knife. It is somewhat thinner, with a hollow
grind blade as its primary grind, thereby making it a better
cutter. It is also completely ground by Jerry, hence the
extra cost. The BAT (Busse Armor piercing Tip) makes the
tip even stronger than what was on the AS.
Anyway, they are very limited as due to their size, they
are a mother to work on. And -once again- Jerry does all
the grinds on her making her by far the least expensive
Variant you will ever see.
Price is $269....get 'em while they last !

V31 - Mutant Mojo
Many, many of my early knives had a blade-catch/bottle
opener feature. . . Many were featured in articles throughout
the '80s, including Combat Knives 1989. Here it is again in its
original configuration. We couldn't cut the Mojos with this exact
shape because the pointed tip of the opener would likely "blow
out" with the laser cut. We rounded it for this reason and
hadn't considered incorporating the "cap lift" feature
on this model. . . But as is typical of this forum, which we value
so greatly, the beer hounds started to howl and we thought we'd
show you how cool it would look, and how well it would work, with
this feature. We may again decide to offer it as an option, but
the downtime we would incur due to all of the "testing"
of the cap lift feature might prove to be far too great.
Psssssttttt. . .. gug. .. . .gug. . . .gug. .. .It
works!!!!!! Many, many of my early knives had a blade-catch/bottle
opener feature. . . Many were featured in articles throughout
the '80s, including Combat Knives 1989. Here it is again in its
original configuration. We couldn't cut the Mojos with this exact
shape because the pointed tip of the opener would likely "blow
out" with the laser cut. We rounded it for this reason and
hadn't considered incorporating the "cap lift" feature
on this model. . . But as is typical of this forum, which we value
so greatly, the beer hounds started to howl and we thought we'd
show you how cool it would look, and how well it would work, with
this feature. We may again decide to offer it as an option, but
the downtime we would incur due to all of the "testing"
of the cap lift feature might prove to be far too great. In regards
to the "Nuclear Mutant" being used in the following
pictures, there is a sequence of events that you need to be aware
of to understand it's origins. First of all, I drew the modification
onto the blade-catch of a perfectly good Mr. Mojo. I quickly ground
it and then tested it on a bottle of Molson XXX. . . . . . and
then another couple. . . and then another 12. . . . and, well,
you get the picture. The next thing I know, "I'm good lookin',
rich, and tough" as a friend of mine would say and I come
to the inebriated conclusion that since the blade-catch has been
modified. . . perhaps in my "enlightened state" a special
"Variant" is beckoning to be born. . . . I sit down
at the grinder, which seemed to be moving very, very slowly. The
next thing I know, I'm caught in the middle of a meteor storm.
There were sparks, pieces of belt, metal shavings, and chunks
of rubber contact wheel, flying everywhere. . . . But, I'm not
playing around, I know where I'm going, and I'm not wasting anytime
getting there. . . I see the pattern that I'm after in my mind's
eye and I am on my way! . . . . Confusingly, I suddenly notice
that Mr. Mojo does not appear to be following along.. . .He has
decided to go to an entirely different place. . .. a place I like
to call the "Toilet Zone" This perfectly good Mojo is
on the highway to hell and he's screamin' "There's no stoppin'
me now Jerry!". I have a Seinfeldian flashback and then realize
that he's talkin' to me! I lay into the grinder with everything
I have, trying to bring him back from the edge of total destruction,
while at the same time screaming back at him, "Don't go towards
the lite!" He does anyway (because it actually is less filling)
. . . .It's too late. . . he's gone! He's toast .. . . It is a
Mr. Mojo Roast and I am the Master of Ceremonies.
Services will be held later in the week. Sadly,
I had forgotten to take pictures of the "Cap Lift" feature
while he was still Mr. Mojo. So, I end up having to take pictures
of his inbred cousin, Mr. Bozo. Had I tested this cap lift feature
on a bottle of anything but beer after beer I wouldn't be having
to explain the birth of this incredibly deformed blade. Let this
be a lesson to all of you. The next time you read a warning label
that says, "The consumption of alcoholic beverages impairs
your ability to operate machinery" . . . . . .Believe it!
***Now of course the above drunken scenario is a
completely fictionalized sequence of events. If you were to actually
try grinding while even slightly inebriated . . .your new nick-name
would be "Stumpy Fingers". . . However, the part about
Mr. Mojo and I screaming at each other. . .That my friends, is
fact!
Yours in Brewclear bottle openers,
Jerry Busse

V34 - Look what just flew in! A Flying Badger????
Take a Badger, give it a deep dish hollow grind
along the clip, flat grind the primary bevel, convex the tip with
a BAT point, fly in some serrations, apply a pair of custom laminated
camo micarta handles, give it a textured finish for stealth purposes,
tighten your seat belt and hold onto your socks. . . . The Flying
Badger is ready for take off!!!!!
Nuke on!

V35 - Satin Finish Versus Bead Blast Finish Steel Heart
Variants.
The one on top has the satin finish; the one
below is the bead blast. The bead blast one is the only straight
handled triple grind double edged variant that Jerry has made.

V39 - Natural Outlaw Variant
Take a Natural Outlaw. . . .Give it a long, primary
clip grind . . . Give it a secondary clip grind an inch from
the tip. . . . give the edge a tanto flavor. . . . Triple chisel
cut the skull crusher. . . . . "fly" the spine of the handle.
. . Call the Governor of New Jersey. . .warn him that this crazed
"Outlaw" is enroute to the Garden State. . . Pray for peace!

V42 - Recurved Satin Jack Variant
They always say, "Never say never". . . well, I
will this, I have no plans to make another one of these. This
is one of those blades that I made while experiencing "grinder's
high". . .sorta like "runner's high" only much dustier and more
toxic.
It is a Satin Jack with a flat primary grind, deep
dish hollow along the clip, with serrations, blended and reinforced
BAT. Snake Skin Micarta handles, flying handle spine, and satin
finished with a zero edge!
YOWZA!!!!!
Thanks,
Jerry

V43 - Steel Heart Variant
I love this knife! The super strong flat primary grind coupled
with a deep dish secondary grind that you could drink out of make
this blade scream! The flying handle and an internally polished
talon hole are just this knife's way of showing that the dancing
shoes are lit and she's ready for take-off at anytime.
