Bad MOJO
is dedicated to the extreme hard core knives made by Busse Combat
Knife Company. The goal of this site is
to be a photo archive of the knives
created by the Busse Combat Knife Company. You will find photos
or information of the current regular models, past models, Custom
& Variants.
This site is also
dedicated to the hardcore Busse fans that love their Busse &
love to see photos of Busse knives & drool over photos of
their favorite knives. (Have a towel within reach.) Thanks
to the Busse owners for allowing the use of their photos on
this site. This site would not be possible without their great
photos.
With all Busse
fans, you will probably find out that you cannot own only one
Busse knife. After visiting this site, you will become a Busse
ADDICT if you are not already one. Enter at your own risk!

web site is not associated with Busse Combat. THIS WEB SITE
DOES NOT SELL KNIVES. Bad MOJO is only a caretaker of the photos

Barrett
Firearms
Hats off to Barrett Firearms for refusing to sell to any Kalifornia
government agencies for supporting the ban on the .50 caliber
to law abiding civilians. More kudos for them on forcing the LAPD
to send someone to pick-up their gun at Barrett Firearms &
not repairing it.
Rob Simonich was killed in a car accident on November 28, 2003.
My condolences to his family. I never met Rob but I do have one
of his custom knife. What a loss! A sad day for all of us!

OCTOBER TREAT
A Busse classic on steriod. The new Fusion Steel
Heart with an 8" blade in your choice of either 1/4"
or 5/16" thick INFI.
The REAL thing folks. The FOLDER under wraps until
its official introduction.
* The new line is just awesome. The ones probably
getting the most comments are the Battle Mistress, Steel Heart,
Satin Jack, & Natural Outlaw.
* Those are not blood groves on the new un-named fighter. The
groves are to lightened the knife.
* There is a possibility of a 5/16" Steel Heart.
* The Busse display table was also awesome. There were knives
from Jerry's users in addition to some from other private collections.
This table was a treat for Busse fans who only saw pictures of
some of their favorite Busse knives. You definitely missed out
if you were not at Blade West 2003.
* Dark Nemesis won the Soohee Award knife for his display. Congrats
& kisses!

Busse Combat Decides To Go Backwards!!!!
We thought that the best way for Busse Combat to continue its
innovation was to zig when we were expected to zag!!!! In order
to advance forward, we have chosen to go backwards. Confused?
Good! So were we! Before Busse Combat hit the beach in ’92
I had over 10 years as a full-time maker. The best part about
making custom knives was the individual attention and options
that could be given to each customer’s order. Giving the
customer a number of options and choices becomes nearly impossible
as you start marking the production numbers that we hit nowadays.
The good news is that we think we have a plan that will allow
us to return to the individual service of those early days and
to offer you guys as many options as possible.
We will be separating our civilian production from our law enforcement
and military runs. Our civilian produced pieces will have a far
better fit and finish than will our mass production runs. They
will have many options available at no charge including differences
in blade color and handle color. They will be run in date determined
batches thus making it much easier for us to provide you with
more accurate delivery dates. These delivery dates should not
be affected by team orders unless we are at war. Our online ordering
has been changed and will no longer automatically charge your
card at the time of order.
The batches will be by model and once a batch date is passed,
all subsequent orders will be included in the following batch.
These batches will be running in approx 2-3 month increments.
For example, if you miss out on the first batch of Fusion Steel
Hearts it could be anywhere from 4 to 6 months before the next
batch reaches completion. The second batch may, likewise, have
different options available than the first batch. We are hoping
that this will “fuse” many of the features of the
Busse Custom Shop with the production power of Busse Combat. We
will offer as many different options as possible from batch to
batch. You will no longer have to settle for a standard model,
but can have the exact knife you want, with the options you want,
made specifically for you. This new protocol will dramatically
increase our cost of manufacturing but should also greatly increase
our customer satisfaction. This should prove to be very helpful
for our new customers who do not understand the concept of “2
weeks”. Sadly, the “2 weeks” call should quickly
become a thing of the past.
More later,
Jerry

Here's Some General Info
On New Line. . .
[1] All blade lengths are measured from the front
of the micarta scales to tip. . . . note how the micarta now extends
over the front guard hole in order to get you another 1/2"
of blade.
[2] Sheaths are no longer included in the price of the knife,
but will be available. There will also be many configurations
in different materials, from several suppliers. We believe that
this will give the customer the most bang for the buck as you
will now only be paying for exactly what you want.
[3] Having not increased our prices in nearly 4 years, in spite
of steady increases in material and labor, the time has come.
We are now employing several new, much more expensive manufacturing
processes that will prove to make for a much better product. Couple
this along with a huge increase in the amount of steel being used
for each individual model, and an increase in prices will be noticed
across the board.
[4] Say farewell to the asymmetric edge! Your feedback indicated
that you prefer a symmetric edge. So, all edges will now be SYMMETRIC
convex unless ordered in an Asymmetric convex configuration.
More to come later. . . . .

The Next Evolution Of The Busse Combat Line!
*** The Ergo line discontined
on 04/15/03 ***
The first Busse Combat Knives featured a Bird Beak pommel with
straight, narrow handles like those found on the original Steel
Heart, and Jungle Assault ('92-'95). . . . Next were the wider,
straight handles, with rounded pommels, like those found on the
Steel Heart II, and Original Battle Mistress ('95-'98). . . Then
came the Ergo handles, like those found on the Battle Mistress
E, Steel Heart E, Natural Outlaw E, and Badger Attack E ('98-'03)
. . . .What's next?. . . . Something very cool has been brewing!
We are extremely confident that you're gonna love this next evolution
of the Busse Combat Line. Wait until you see some of the new designs
that will be coming out in the year to come! YOWZA!!!!!
The Busse Combat line continues to evolve. The protos for this
next evolution have been in the field since May. Their performance
has been incredibly impressive. We will continue to offer the
Ergo models until the current batches are sold out. Once they
are gone, that will be the end of the Ergo line.
Stay tuned!

Why Serrations ??
If you look at some of the recent knives we have
come out with, notably the Flying Tiger and the Flying Mojo, you
will notice they are "adorned" with unique serrations toward the
front of the blade.
I have often been asked of late as to whether
they really improve performance.
The answer is "No" and "Yes"! These serrations
do not improve chopping performance, nor do they hinder it. Due
to their shape and design they will not get stuck in whatever
it is you are chopping, like normal serrations have a tendency
to do. But the knives we have put them on are not really choppers,
they are fighters.
Jerry has long believed that serrations are in
the wrong place. For a fighter, you want the serrations on the
front of the blade. Why? Well just like the old Ginsu knives were
able to cut through anything, our "Flying" serrations would make
short work of a leather jacket or equally heavy clothing or canvas
material that would otherwise repel the sharpest blade. Our serrations,
besides looking very aggressive, are VERY AGRESSIVE.
Just like the Combat line can win just about any
cutting or chopping contest on this planet, they will likewise
win any contest that simulates stabbing. So the next time someone
pokes fun at these curious looking blades with their unique serrations,
remember, they are not just for show, they are for real !

KNIFECoating
The satin finish requires much
more hand-finishing and thus more time spent on each individual
knife. Our tests have shown that the blade coating does not adhese
as well to the highly polished surface of a satin finish as it
does to the slightly coarser finish that is present before polishing.
Therefore, if we spent the extra time required to polish every
blade, we would have to charge more for coated knives that would
offer lower performance in regards to coating adhesion.
Hope this helps,
Jerry Busse

$7,500 Busse Collection...
Okay, here is the deal - your great
great aunt on your father's side just passed away (you never met
her) leaving you $7,500 that you DON'T need to pay bills. So you
have decided that Busses are safer and more fun than stocks and
you want to "invest" the $7,500 on Busses.
Which will you choose? Here is my
fantasy $7,500 Busse collection. Let me know what you would put
in your collection:
1. Original American Kensei (perhaps
$2,000 if you could find one)
2. Argonne Assault - the "knuckle knife" (perhaps $1,500 if you
could find someone and pry it out of their dead, cold fingers!)
3. Straight Handled Clip Point Battle Mistress - $1,000 one of
the first INFI BMs
4. Straight Handled "Ghost" Busse Steel Hearts (the Busse name/logo
is barely noticeable - $1,000) very rare.
5. I wanted to stay away from Variants but there is one that Jerry
said he would never duplicate - Chip's Quintuple grind SH - $750(would
that do it Chip??)
6. A Lean Mean Street, Flying Tiger and Bad Apple (all destined
to go up in value) $1,500

Get A Quick Degree In Micartaolgogy!
This post started
as a response to our new friend Mell's inquiry regarding the handle
material on his new Mean Street. As I responded it started to
turn into the "War and Peace" of general Micarta info. So. . .
.I decided to post it separately in order that it might be used
as a quick reference.
Micarta was developed
by Westinghouse earlier in the last century. It has a higher tensile
strength than steel, it is impervious to changes in temperature
and it will not swell, warp, or crack, even under adverse conditions,
once it is on the knife.
There are three
types of micarta and several grades of these three types. They
all consist of layers of either paper, linen, or canvas. Paper
is the most decorative of the three. I have seen paper micarta
handles that are 20-30 years old that continue to look great and
perform like the day the were made. Linen micarta is the middle
grade when it comes to toughness and durability. I used linen
exclusively throughout the 80's and very early 90's. It is very
attractive when smoothed out and very strong. Canvas is the toughest
of the three grades. It surpasses linen micarta by a large margin
for strength and durability. Canvas also offers the best overall
texture for slip resistance. It is probably the least attractive
looking of the three grades unless you suffer from Busse Combat
Nuclear Syndrome. In that case you can only find "beauty in the
performance". Cosmetics be damned!
It would be difficult
to go wrong with any of these three grades.
MICARTA TRIVIA BUSTER:
I've come across some interesting history on Micarta through one
of our legal resources. While doing research on Westinghouse he
discovered that the inventors of Formica had borrowed so heavily
from Micarta technology that the name "Formica" is short for the
term "Formerly Micarta". Think of that the next time you drop
a skillet on the kitchen counter. . . .
Oh yeah, I'm loaded
with useless information like that. . . . Would you like to hear
where the names "Steel Heart" and "Battle Mistress" came from.
.. . .?
Yours in layered
phenolics (Micarta),
Jerry Busse
