Mintage: 4,540,000.

Date Acquired: 1980?

Variety: perhaps an earlier die state of F-122? A few of what appear to be the same die cracks are present here as on Gerry Fortin's plate coin, but many aren't

About This Coin: In 1891, the New Orleans Mint began minting dimes for the first time in over thirty years. This mint was taken over by the Confederates in 1861, was reopened in 1879 after the end of Reconstruction and resumed dime coinage in 1891. Dime production at branch mints was reduced from 1878 to 1890; the last CC-mint dimes were minted in 1878 and after that, only the San Francisco Mint produced some dimes from 1884 to 1890. As a last year of issue, this coin is fairly common in higher circulated grades and in mint state.

At first I thought this coin was cleaned, but upon closer analysis, I think it was merely dipped -- virtually always a mistake with circulated coins. Under magnification, around much of the periphery you can see vivid blues and violets that don't show well in this picture. I can only speculate how this coin would have looked as the toner it certainly once was.

seated dime home here!
