Mintage: 2,533,427. Date Acquired: 21 August 2005. Variety: Unknown. Doesn't seem to exactly match any known variety in the Fortin reference. About This Coin: This is a lovely, original AU piece that I had to buy when I saw it, especially when the price was right. Considerable luster still remains under the naturally toned surfaces and is seen in the protected areas, especially around the date. This has the lowest mintage of any Philadelphia Seated Dime after 1881. The S-mint dime of this date is very scarce and prized by collectors of the series; only 43,690 1885-S coins were minted. Purchasers of the '85-S who are not series specialists are highly advised to buy only certified specimens, as there are altered 1885 Philadelphia coins with added mint marks out there! |
