Mintage: 7,310,510. Date Acquired: 7 November 2005. Variety: F-103? About This Coin: As a long time collector of Indian cents, I've always been drawn to the 1877 date. For thirty years it seemed like an unattainable mystery until I finally obtained a nice specimen in that series. Coincidentally, I picked this one up from the same seller from whom I bought the '77 IHC last year. Type 1 reverse and most likely F-103 based on date position, though I'm not sure about all the die lines on the reverse. And I don't see a die clash on the reverse, either. 1877 marked the only year in the Seated dime series where the Philadelphia mintage was lower than the Carson City mintage. There's still a surprising amount of luster on this coin, mostly in the protected areas of the obverse which don't really show well in this picture. Even the fields -- again, mostly on the obverse -- show a bit of original underlying luster trying to peek out. I need to try to reimage the obverse to get it to show -- it's quite nice. |
