Mintage: 1,770,000. Date Acquired: 10 June 2006. Variety: Uncertain; possibly unlisted. It doesn't have any of the diagnostics for any of the varieties which have this general date location. Best guess would be an early die state of F-107. About This Coin: I took a chance on what looked like a nice coin in one of those fly-by-night grading services ("UGS") using Coin World holders. The grade they listed was VF-35, which (based on a small picture) didn't appear too out of line. Based on what I could see (again, small picture), the coin looked very original and attractive and had no obvious problems. With the coin in hand I was surprised that if anything, UGS may have slightly undergraded it as a case could be made for full EF details. However there are just enough spots and crud, mostly on the reverse, that I'd "market grade" it as a VF-30. Still beats the heck out of stripped and dipped. 1854-O dimes aren't quite as commonly seen in higher grades as its reasonably high mintage would indicate. |
