Mintage: 839,000. Date Acquired: 21 November 2005. Variety: F-101. Gerry Fortin writes that he has "had difficulty in locating an example of Variety 101, where Reverse A does not exhibit a die crack from UNITE(D) to the wreath and ONE," but he has attributed this coin as F-101. About This Coin: A little hit by the neck is the only real distraction on the coin. In my opinion it just misses the XF grade but displays most of the sharpness and eye appeal of a nice, original XF coin . This was the first really nice '49 I found in the grade range I was seeking, which is interesting given Fortin's experience in trying to locate an F-101. He wrote to me that "(i)t seemed like every time I found an 1849 dime with Obverse 1 (weak 18 digits), the reverse would always have that long die crack through UNITE(D) into the wreath." I guess a blind squirrel finds an acorn once in a while. |
