Mintage: 245,000. Date Acquired: 16 December 2006. Variety: F-102. About This Coin: This is an historically underrated and undervalued date that is beginning to be recognized as somewhat less common than the commons, particularly in grades above Fine. Gerry Fortin writes that "(t)he 1847 date is relatively difficult in lower grades and becomes very scarce in EF or better." Its relative low value to mintage and availability is probably most due to being a Philadelphia Mint issue. The present specimen is a nice, even problem-free gray with pleasant original surfaces, and certainly a cut above the typical VF for this date in eye appeal and originality if not level of detail. |
