Mintage: 981,500. Date Acquired: 29 January 2007. Variety: F-105. About This Coin: I needed to burn a $50 Teletrade coupon before the end of January 2007, so I "overpaid" a little bit for this one (before the coupon) but was a great buy after using it. This one was in a new generation ANACS slab as VF-35 (properly graded, IMO) which was cracked out and placed in the Dansco. It's a nice original-looking example, and with the coin in hand, the spotting isn't as noticeable as it is on these images. The early Seated dimes with tilted shield can't be graded the same way as the later dimes with the upright shield. The traditional grading definitions for Seated coins require a full LIBERTY for the Fine grade and a bold LIBERTY for a VF grade, but the tilted-shield coins (1837 through 1840) had the shield wear much faster. As a result, an early dime can have a couple of letters in the middle of LIBERTY missing and still grade Fine. Similarly, the middle of LIBERTY can be a bit weak and still grade choice VF. |
