Why AU-58? Lots of reasons. On one hand, I love the full details, shine and luster to mint state coins. On the other hand, I like the relative affordability of circulated coins, and I like that they clearly have a history where commerce is concerned. So what's a fledgling type collector to do? Well, in terms of affordability, if I wanted high-grade coins, most of them can be had in MS-60 -- but a lot of them have terrible eye appeal -- and they lack the history that a circulated coin has, that romantic wondering about where a coin has been in history and how it was used. The AU-58 grade seems to have the best trade-offs -- the truly choice examples are essentially MS-63 or MS-64 coins with only a trace of rub, they are more affordable than nice mint state coins, and they have a history of being used in commerce. How cool is that?
Got any AU-58s to unload? If you have some PCGS, NGC or ANACS certified AU-58s of true premium quality that you'd like to sell, let me know (my e-mail address is below). I am looking for coins that mostly have MS-63+ eye appeal but with just the slightest amount of rub that keeps it from being mint state. I'm well-prepared to pay above published "trends" values for true quality; top quality, after all, isn't cheap. And in any case, it doesn't cost anything to discuss it, and it might save you some consignment fees or eBay fees. I'm just getting started on this set, so as you can see, I still need most types. For now, I'm looking for common dates and asking prices under $1,000 (mostly under $500 but can extend for the right piece). |
