I'm sure it is a fix
30/04/08 00:51
I was flipping
through a magazine which I've bought over the weekend, and suddenly
it occur to me I must shoot this.

This is the second time since I've received this. Not wanting to say this is a hoax, but isn't this a bit old time to use the sweepstake draw to tempt people into subscribing? Especially if I can be so lucky to receive it 2 times (though the first was a couple of years back, and they chased me for payment which I refused to pay).
And I thought this only happens overseas - referring to the ticket for 10000 pounds. I don't really qualify - I think they ignored the fact that the magazine has readers all over the world - thought I got 3 stars on the first ticket and 3 pounds on the second.
I don't think I'd send in the ticket. Then again, maybe I might choose to take part in Reader's Digest - I might just get lucky

AS per the title
goes, this post is to show some of the pictures taken during the
concert by MayDay, or 五月天. The night was spoilt again
by the organizers who have no knowledge of professional cameras,
judging only by the length of your lens.
DUH. Sometimes it's quite demeaning when the lack of knowledge is translated into pure ignorance on their part. Especially when they ask me to change to another lens of smaller length - I only had to remove the lens hood to make it shorter, ha!
Anyways, without further ado, the pictures. All low res, of course

Essentials know-hows for your iPod Touch (maybe for your iPhone)
26/04/08 16:51
AFTER an excruciating
experience, my iPod is now brand new - contents wise. Without
knowing why it suddenly changed from 1.1.4 back to 1.1.3, I had a
horrible experience trying to get it back to the latest firmware -
losing all my transactions in Pocket Money
Anyways, some must knows:
1. If you screw up your jail break or ziphone, press both POWER and HOME button while connecting to the computer, which will force it to go into restore mode.
2. The latest firmware is here. Make sure it is saved as ipsw, and not unzipped.
3. Some of the must have software for me:

You'd need iSpazio source to get Restart. gpSPhone allows you to play GBA games, which erhem you'd be able to google online. Capture, WildEyes, DropCopy are apps which I've reviewed before. MobileChat allows you to do instant messenging when you're out. SummerBoard allows you to tweak your theme, after you installed you'd see SMBPrefs. BossTool allows you to transfer your apps to a new partition as most of your apps are cramped into one partition, hence you always get your "insufficient disk space" warning.
I like PocketMoney most of all for now, very similar to Cha-Ching if you're a fan. Will post some reviews at some point or another.
Hope this is helpful if you stumbled into this page

COMES at a
price.
We always wonder how come the government is willing to sponsor building Wireless SG network. Is it to increase literacy level, to allow everyone to get an opportunity to stay connected?
I guess to earn more money.
Was at MacDonald's trying to surf this website when this annoying banner irk me.

Seems like Creative is getting desperate and annoying. Imagine the irony of it - Creative ads on dot mac site.
What a contradiction

By some stroke of luck, good or bad, I
managed to lose my air ticket - a bombshell on my already big holed
jeans. Nonetheless, shall try to forget how this made me so sullen.
The room was in a mess after the frantic struggle to find the
magazine, of course.

The day trip was ok. The orange route was the way I walked, which was a bit far by most standards.

Was dropped off at Central Market, where I walked about at Chinatown, or Chi Chong Kai, in Cantonese.

This street's famous for replica items...such as branded stuff, hotels and software.

The way they mistreated IP, you could see the IE icon used everywhere.

The food there, however was fantastic. Armed with the knowledge that the people there stole often but offered good stuff to eat, naturally, I went to get a couple of good stuff.

This auntie's famous here for her mua chee, a form of flour-made dessert. Her flavorings are:

Of course, with so much walking, a guy needed to drink. Not wanting to settle for any tom, dick, or harry, he'd choose the best!

The words literally translate to king of tea.

This packet of tea is my savior, for I could walk around without being disturbed. Somehow, if you're seen buying local stuff and wearing local clothings, they tend to disturb you far lesser.
Next up, a group of touters on the streets. They showed dark faces when you refuse their offers, be it transport or women.

The taxis were a sight to behold too. So many of them!

Not wanting to go up any of them, it was a long walk up till Berjaya Times Square. Spotted some interesting stuff, naturally.

Made a pair of specs by Berjaya TImes Square, and walk about the streets trying to find some shops which were supposed to be famous for cameras. It was a bit of a disappointment though as prices were so-so.
The shock of the day was the inefficient transport system in KL. The lrt was still ok.

The KTM isn't. It was a long and lonely wait. An hour! How can such inefficiencies happen in the town! And I had to rush back to get some work done...

Oh well. After the almost 2 hours wait, I swear to myself not to take the bloody train. The cab isn't cheap either. Probably they knew what they were in for - tourists money. A return trip cost me rm100...which was incredible but yet they reasoned it out to be a rainy day and huge traffic problems. Something you can't argue against.
The night was bad, with heavy rain.

Almost got knocked over by a car. Naturally (forgive me for being sexist) it was a female driver, who waved her hands up apologetically after she realized she was inches away from me. It wasn't my fault - with bright shiny umbrella and tshirt, and I was crossing the road in front of a carpark, the least she could do is to drive slowly instead of charging towards me.
Nevermind that.
KL towers was clouded in rain, and I can't find anyway of getting near it. With boss's sms ringing, I hadn't a choice but to try to make towards KLCC to get a cab back.

KLCC is worse - after comparing the various malls I went for the past 2 days. Too many branded shops that I can't really breathe. Due to the rain, the water display was deserted, and nobody was trying to get into the twin towers - something which I wanted to. After all, if you're going to KL, without visiting the twin towers, it's quite dumb.

Probably the picture is too small, but I really find the rain beautiful amongst the lights.
I guess the short day tour alone sort of compensated for the huge losses. Or does it? No one can be sure. Nonetheless, I guess I probably will head back there again - if only to get the cheap original Liverpool jersey

YOU know when you see
things like A&W and Tower Records around, that this must be a
place that is slightly backwards when compared to fast pace
Singapore.

You know when you see a pianist being caged up playing piano that he's not going to enjoy the same treatment he will if he is to perform elsewhere.

You know when inflation in Singapore might not be that bad after all if you discovered you're paying twice the meter from cab.

You know when Singapore doesn't really have good food when you taste heavenly food at Port Klang.

It's been a journey where I can't keep being amazed at. With a mega mall that easily dwarfed any in Singapore, you'd be surprised that both new and old things exist.
Then again, maybe it's just me.
It's one of those days where you find that you're rediscovering things that you'd feel satisfied. Food at Port Klang was really good. My aunt brought me to this restaurant called Coconut flower Restaurant, and boy, the food was good! The tom yam was a little sour, a little hot, but pleasant and sweet. The prawns were succulent, the crab was fleshy and tasty, the salted chicken tasted just nice and yet special...and it goes on and on.
The catch of the day is the coconut flower wine. Said to be fermented coconut, the taste was a bit overwhelming at first, but really sweet and tasty after that! Even my cousins were enjoying the drink as though it was a soft drink, when they're only primary school!
I think I really lacked good food, time to venture more!

Syncing iTunes Wifi Store
17/04/08 22:40
THE previous
tutorial on buying songs from iTunes (check out the tags) should be
pretty helpful for anyone who is interested in buying.
Now, there are some problems when people buy songs with the WIFI iTunes Store -> the songs bought from either the iPod Touch or iPhone refused to sync back to the main computer!
Actually, this is a known bug, but can be easily solved with some googling.
Of course, I've mentioned it, so I'd briefly guide you through:
1. Right click the iPod Touch/iPhone icon in your iTunes.
2. Select "Transfer Purchases".
3. You'd get your song back

Simple right?
Now listening to We Sing, We Dance, Jason Mraz

Interesting != Controversial
14/04/08 23:31
THE recent rants by
Miss Cheng, aka Wendy or Xiaxue, on her preference for a faked
Apple iPhone has been overwhelming, to say the least. Whilst the
power of blogging is not to be underestimated, blatent attempts to
drive readership by dabbling with controversial topics is quite
sad.
For a while, I thought there's not much difference between a blog and a tabloid.
Not that there should be much difference, of course. To some, they might just want to rant (like me), to others, maybe they want to earn some money by ranting.
Of course, everyone wouldn't mind an extra few dollars if they're not Bill Gates or Warren Buffet.
With engadget and other blogging Mac platforms picking up this "interesting" post, she declares another war on Mac users. With her one sided perception that Mac users think that they're higher class blah blah, she irks the blogosphere by showing her contempt for Mac fanatics.
I wouldn't say I know much more than her, of course. After all, knowledge is subjective. Who is to judge who knows more? Not me of course.
At the end of the day, my best shot is that not all interesting topics are controversial, and not all controversial stuff are interesting. Of course, to be a little defensive, not all Mac users are fanatics, or even think highly of themselves.
Please correct your thoughts a little, girl
I do agree with her postings that it is bias, and more of a joke, but do spare some thoughts for the boat you sank with your bamboo stick, ok?

Inflation != Extortion
13/04/08 17:18

IT wasn't the most pleasant of sight to behold in your local supermarket. With all the talk about inflation, everything seems to cost more. A packet of KL milk cost $2.90 now, as compared to last time lowly $2++
Sigh.
It didn't stop there. Munching on apples is becoming a fast habit for me, and the sight of the rotting apples disgust me. Why on earth would NTUC Fairprice charge groceries at that kind of pricing, and offers rotten apples?
I bet they think with all the inflation talk, people would rather risk getting cheaper and lower quality stuff.
This kind of thinking sucks big time. They need to readjust their strategy, less this picture goes flooding around our local forums. Seriously, with the readjustment of our currency, inflating prices ought to be brought to a halt. That's what we learn from Economics, isn't it?
Don't dream about it. My best guess is that price can only go higher. After all, it affects most households with scant knowledge about monetary policies to battle inflation. The merchandisers would probably try to squeeze the poor folks out of their income, even though the government is trying their best.
Empty talk, I know, but I bet this must be true of the typical scenario that is happening now. Next time, after you buy your meal, do take note whether you are buying "normal" stuff to eat, ok?
Be careful of the rotten stuff!
Contagious
12/04/08 22:18
IT really must be
contagious.
While some people might think that it is because of your close contact with the brand that you get more self conscious of it, I somehow doubt so.
Just a few days ago, I was commenting to my boss that I've been seeing quite a number of Audi cars along the road, especially these few months. He pointed out to me of that fact.
I couldn't be sure then.
However, with regards to another issue, I'm quite confident of it. The influence of Apple. Why so?
My sec 3 cousin bought a laptop.
"YOU MUST BE KIDDING! WHY DO HE EVEN NEED ONE?" one might exclaimed.
Well, it's the truth, and no point withholding that fact. The disgusting fact is that he bought a Mac.
Yah, I had my first one when I was 22 I think.
Oh well. Different times. To think that the government actually allowed our currency to appreciate against the USD$ for anticipation of inflation pressures, and my cousin, being the young and cannot think type, went along with his absurd idea of buying a Mac for his studies just because his project mate refused to get a computer.
Sigh. What in the world is happening...
Any case, after another bout of installation, for several hours, I finally got everything up and running. Apple kind of missed some steps when it comes to Boot Camp:
1. Make sure you repair permissions and disk after creating the partition, else you might hit a black screen.
2. When one allocates the Boot Camp partition to be more than 32gb, please select NTFS formating to prevent disk errors.
Hope the above tips are helpful.

SOMEHOW I feel my
blog has started to slowly transit towards guides for iPod Touch
and iPhone for the non-geeks.
Not that this is intentional though.
Thinking through, I guess I should set up a separate section for these guides, and separate from the main blog. After all, this is not an IT blog. Just thought I should share some knowledge though.
Anyways, life's been busy. Hardly any day passed by without some meeting or two, and planning for training sessions has been getting to me for a while. My first flight was on a business trip to KL, on SQ, something I'd never have imagined myself to be doing.
Not that i hate flying though, ha.
Sometimes, unexpected things just pop out of the blue. After changing my signature today, I received a mail (finally) which I have been looking forward to. Ecstatic and thrilled by the chance, I quickly draft out my reply and share the good news with my gf.
Guess what was the catch of the day? Someone praising me for my eloquence in language! Ha, this is totally unimaginable, an untenable quote which I'd never imagine someone to say that of me.
What say you? Am I better when I'm typing, or when I'm talking?
Pray tell me when you next see me then

Wildeyes and DropCopy
09/04/08 22:27
HELPING out a
colleague on how to view PDF on his iPhone wasn't easy. However,
now this can be easier. This post will focus on Wildeyes and
DropCopy, which can be installed from Installer, under
Utilities.

You do need to cancel everytime if you don't donate, a bit cumbersome, but come on, it's free, right?

Now, this looks better than the original one shown previously right?

All pdfs will be placed to the PDF folder. Simple right? Now for dropping the files to the iPod Touch/iPhone

DropCopy for Mac

DropCopy for iPod Touch/ iPhone
You can find DragCopy here. Dropping files will require both the iPod Touch/iPhone to have the app, and the desktop to have the application too. To drop files into the gadget, it is as simple as dragging the file to the hole, select the name of the gadget, and drop into it. Simple right?

Getting PDF, Doc, Xls viewer on your iPod Touch/iPhone (edited)
09/04/08 14:43
WELL, ever fancy your
iPod Touch or iPhone reading Word documents? PDF files? Just like
any other normal PDA?
I just hit on the right spot, so will be pulling in some simple instructions:
Applications you'd need:
1. Cyberduck

This cute ducky works wonders
Ok. For people viewing this, my best bet is that you've got your gadget ziphoned. Credit to ZiPhone, and for Rupert (in previous post) for teaching how to break it. In any case, some of you might be overwhelmed by the immense amount of new things to learn, and you really want your gadget to view the things. Let's get started!
1. You should have the community source of Conceited Software installed with ZiPhone.
2. Click on Installer, then at bottom dock click on Install.

3. Install PHP (under Development), and lighttpd (under Network). The install button is on the top right corner when you select the package.

4. Shut down your iPod/iPhone.
5. Start your iPhone.
6. Go back installer, go to Tweaks -> PDF/DOC/XLS Viewer
7. Install it
8. Repeat steps 4 and 5
9. Select Settings, select WIFI, and the Wireless source

10. Copy down the IP address.

11. Start up Cyberduck, and select SFTP for protocol, and the IP address of your gadget under Server. User name is root, password is alpine. Allow the unknown hostkey.

12. Throw your stuff into sites.
13. Fire up Safari and the following URL

14. You're done
Don't throw in 15mb PDF and expect it to read though.
Edited 09.04.08
I realised that only the latest ziphoned iPhone or iPod touch has the necessary installation files in order to SSH into the gadget. For older ones:
1. You need to install both BSD Subsystem and Installer under Systems.
2. Restart your iPod Touch/ iPhone after that and follow the above steps. That should do.
I'm connecting to my iPod Touch using an easier way instead of finding the IP address. For mine, I know the name of the gadget is iPod.local since it appears whenever it is connected with Bonjour (I have Growl installed on my Mac), I'm using that instead.
Hope this helps

IT is hardly a surprise that people support piracy, and many a time they land in trouble doing that. Now lives are claimed.
"What!" One might claim. Well...one should never support the use of fake drugs. I wouldn't blame the people of the past who's uneducated to people in traditional medicine, but now? Just trying to save some money to have more sex? It's dumb, totally so. Without getting the right prescription, they're really saving money at the expense of their lives.
One life's been claimed by Power 1 Walnut. Now fake Cialis has landed another person in coma too. What's next? Fake Viagra leading to erectile dysfunction? There really should be a limit to how men are controlled by their bottoms, and not think straight. Sigh. I hate to admit I'm a guy too...
I think the folks who research on sex in our garden city must have gotten their statistics wrong. They forgot to do research on the number of visits to our favorite red light district, and the immense potential that sex industry has.
Even when it comes to such stupid things like fake drugs. Arrgh!
Are you really satisfied?

THE Straits Times published an article today on customer satisfaction index. The service provided by the various sectors, as well as the formula for calculating it which was imported (bought) from the States, placed it at around 70%.
I guess this is a fair level, but is it indicative of most of our voice here?
The study is done according to feedback given from customers, focus groups and such. However, most of us experience bad service from time to time. This, is definitely not shown in the study. Comparing apples to oranges is hardly a fair option to begin with:
For example, for other countries, we're given the liberty to tip for good services, instead of the compulsory service charge. How about lack of service? Who do we claim the charges back?
Many a while, we often experience sales representatives who suck up to people who dress and act rich, or are foreigners. Without naming the shop, it actually has the audacity to claim that it won a best service award for the year!
The criterias must have sucked badly.
Nonetheless, many would think these are but one off instances of bad service and not reflective of the 70% good service rendered. Not for me though. Honestly, if the study were to show a lack of service, I would gladly agree.
How about you?
Repeating a song on the iPod Touch/iPhone

BEING a new user of
the iPod Touch, the non-familiarity of the gadget irks me. On the
way to work, I was playing the song "Onion" by Aska Yang, and it
sort of irritates me that I can't repeat the song.
Not any more.
1. Play the song first, and click on the album art. A rectangular box will appear with the option to scroll through the song.

2. Tap on the loop icon (now, this is familiar already right?). You can either choose to repeat one song, or repeat the album.

Enjoy your songs folks!

Capture screenshots on your iPod Touch

ONE more thing before
hitting the bed:
iSpazio has a great app for screen capture, named CAPTURE. It works totally fine on the iPhone, but some folks might have problems with the iPod Touch. Just some pointers.
1. First, you can add the repository under sources. Click on EDIT, then ADD. The repository url is http://repo.ispazio.net.
i.
ii.
iii.
2. Install Capture from Installer -> iSpazio Apps.
3. Do your captures as per normal, but since iPod Touch does not have camera roll, you'd need Cyberduck to SSH it out.
4. Open Cyberduck, same instructions as previously, use the IP address of your iPod Touch.
5. Select /private/var

6. Select the following folders -> Mobile -> Media -> DCIM -> 100APPLE
7. Double click on your image files for the screen capture. They are jpg files.

Hope this is useful for all

Getting touchy, aren't I?

DAMN. This is the
umpteenth time that Rapidweaver has crashed on me before I managed
to upload my entry.
Not that it matters much. Just need to retype the entry, which, in my opinion, can get quite pissing at times.
Nonetheless, it's been a busy week as Monday arrives again, with the wheel of time passing and go. This is definitely not the third age, ha. Not Rand here (folks who read The Wheel of Time series would know what I'm referring to). Sometimes, one just need to change something to spice up the monotonous cycle - for me, the newest addition to my family of Macs:

Please! Don't pronounce this as the iTouch! It's iPod Touch! I guess this nifty gadget can satisfy my desires of watching videos on the go, and a PDA too, albeit a basic one. It just needs some tweaking in order to enhance the features.
Ha, tweaking = jailbreaking, of course. Thanks to Rupert, attempts to ziphone the iPod Touch was a breeze.
Subsequent installation of apps was not that smooth, though. I guess one can't ask for too much, right? I guess the way to go is just to enjoy the convenience of the gadget for now.
On a side note, Apple could do better with the iPhone SDK, and its embracement of third party developers. Opening its arms yet shoving off potential good developers certainly isn't a good way to start off with hackers.
Only time will tell whether Apple has a winning formula with its upcoming push mail enabled 3G iPhone

Doing the wrong things, for the wrong reason

THIS should appear old to you, as the articles were featured a week ago. Well, there were many comments about the transition of SIA's agency from Batey to TBWA\, and those are already old news, forgive the pun.
While many people expected a new agency to inject zest and life to an established brand, sometimes, it appears that the top management themselves need some injection of new blood. SIA used to be the pride of Singapore, with the famous sarong kabaya as famous as our Singapore girl. Some might say that the girl might appear too subservient for their liking, well, I don't go into personal attacks like this
So what did went wrong? I guess its a cumulation of several factors, most notably people's pride getting into them. Disciplinary problem start from the very top. If you have pilots with porn caught in your laptops and getting fined, that's hardly good news for your company. Looking upwards in the hierarchy, the decision to go purely business and above for some flights went off really bad, as Singaporeans can't even get to travel in their pride. Attempts to mask it up were credited to creating a premium experience, and a quality brand.
Can you imagine feeling proud of something which you can't even call your own? I would say it's really a blatant monetary move to ostracize the poorer folks, and to earn more dollars from the rich.
The decision to change agency and flexing your arm around the new agency is even worse. News travel fast that TBWA\ got their warning letters by SIA barely months into their newly formed relationship. Advertisements that came out of agencies were okay, nothing to shout about.
Why change then?
The worst part of it is having the airbus grounded. Not once, not twice. 3 times. What's the big deal about having it first, if the company has 3 groundings 3 months into operations?
What can save SIA's fate from plummeting into mediocrity? I guess somewhere out there, the bosses must stop counting his dollars and start thinking about public opinions. Anything worse can result into the same fiasco as Terminal 5, Heathrow Airport. Systems gone down, lack of manpower, tonnes of luggage to be sorted out...
They don't even dare to show theirs ads now, after this disaster.
Okay, I'm exaggerating. An airline is nowhere as big as an airport disaster. Well, you do get the idea, don't you? Is it all about the money on hand, or salvaging one's relationships with customers?
