About C.S. Marks, Ph.D.: Christine Stewart- Marks, Ph.D.B.S. 1974, Zoology, Butler UniversityM.A. 1980, Zoology, University of Southern Illinois (Carbondale)Ph.D. 1989, Life Sciences, I.S.U.I am pleased to be able to present to you, my fellow (fellow?) RHPC’ers, on the occasion of the ‘Healthy Horse, Healthy You’ seminar 2008. Here is the mercifully short version of requested biography: I was born in Nebraska and I am 54 years old. Ok…the slightly longer version: I am one of a very small number of Full Professors of Equine Science in the United States, and have been teaching for over thirty years, first in Biology, and then in Equine Science. I have been chair of the Equine Studies program at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College for the past fifteen years. I have about fifty students, and I teach courses in Nutrition, Lameness, Genetics, Reproduction, Conditioning, Health, and Selection. Needless to say, I love my job.I currently own five horses, and before I started writing novels I was an active competitor in Endurance and Competitive Trail. I have a distinguished history in the sport, and rarely fail to finish. I completed the prestigious Tom Quilty Australian National Championship hundred mile ride in 1998, one of fewer than ten Americans to have done so. I believe it was my finest hour. Today I enjoy trail riding for fun, as I live on the trailhead at Owen-Putnam State Forest. My friend Becky and I run a CTR at our farm called ‘Mirkwood Run’. We specialize in first-time competitors, as we want their first experience to be so great that they are hooked for life! (All part of the evil plan…)Five years ago I began my journey as a fiction writer, and have now published three high fantasy novels (Elfhunter, Fire-heart, Ravenshade) in which horses are prominent characters. The books are doing well, and have been embraced by readers aged eight through ninety. I am now working on first screenplay (Elfhunter) and Elfhunter audiobook. I enjoy doing artwork to go with the writing, having illustrated all three novels including the cover art. In my free time, I enjoy making longbows using ancient techniques, and skewering defenseless burlap feed sacks filled with recycled paper. I will have been married for thirty years in August but have no children (though we do have a pretty fair-sized herd of dogs, including four Corgis).I joined RHPC because I knew Jane of old, and I reckoned that any organization founded by her should be fun and intriguing. I am always looking for new riding buddies! I have twelve miles of trail in my front yard, so I hope I get to see you one of these days. --C.S. Marks
