This is where I used to live in Japan. Atsumi is primarily a farming town. Here, rice is grown (of course). Atsumi is also famous for it's greenhouse techniques. In those greenhouses, melons and flowers are grown. The melons are particularly precious. Believe it or not, these melons sell for between $75 and $150 in Japan's larger cities! Personally, I would never pay so much for a mere melon, but the Japanese people seem to love them.

Above is Kojigahama beach on the Pacific Ocean. This is the very end of the peninsula as seen from the Irago View Hotel. This is the resort area of Atsumi is called "Cape Irago." The view is stunning. The small mountain at the end is a critical stopping point for migratory hawks in the fall and is thus a popular bird-watcher's spot.

These are the expensive melons in question. Do they look like they're worth $75 to you?

Here are some of the Sakura Trees in spring (the pink ones).

Here is the Atsumi Flower Park. This picture was taken in January. Yes! Flowers bloom all year round here! Jealous? I thought so! Way off in the distance, you can see the Irago View Hotel.

In the distance, you can see Kamishima off the coast of Cape Irago basking in the early evening sun.
To find out more, check out the Atsumi Town web site! It is, of course, in Japanese, so you must have a computer that can read Japanese characters. Good luck!
