Here are
a few examples of meetings, workshops and training sessions that
I have designed and facilitated.
Special Libraries Association
I served as the graphic recorder for a workshop focused on how to address the unprecedented challenges facing SLA:

Casey Foundation Constituency Engagement
The Casey Family Programs Constituency Engagement in Seattle was in need of a graphic facilitator to help them prepare a presentation to their Board of Trustees. I designed and facilitated a one-day working meeting. During the meeting, the team discussed the department timeline, their successes and challenges and their future direction. I captured it all in a draft mural. After the meeting, I refined the mural into a finished product for use at the presentation:

National Endowment for Financial Education
I served as graphic recorder for a half-day brainstorming session for the National Endowment for Financial Education:

Big
Sky Study Circles
The
community of Big Sky, Montana was divided over whether or not a
local high school should be built. Many parents were frustrated
with their children's hour-long bus ride to Bozeman, while others
felt that a local school would not be able to offer the same quality
of education as Bozeman High School. In order to engage all points
of view concerning this complex (and emotional) issue, community
leaders organized a series of Study Circles - I volunteered to be
one of the facilitators. To sort out values, issues, and goals.
I used a variety of techniques including appreciative inquiry, conversation
café, and graphical facilitation - as shown here:

I also
designed the final community meeting which I based on Open Space
technology. It was very successful in engaging all the participants,
clarifying committee agendas, defining specific tasks, and gaining
commitment from committee members...all in just two hours!
As
one of the organizers said:
“ The visuals you created were terrific. The format was sooo successful . . . all are speaking about how successful the Open Space Meeting was! ”
The
Museum of Flight Personal Courage Wing Docent Training
The
goal of this project was to get the docents ready in a short amount
of time to lead visitor tours of the new Personal Courage Wing exhibit
of WWI and WWII fighter aircraft. The docents attended two four-hour
workshops, and together, we created a mural-sized timeline, described
the features of each artifact, placed the artifacts appropriately
on the timeline, and identified key world events, tactics &
technologies, and pilots.

Docents
had the option of creating a miniature version at their desk, and
following the workshop they had an opportunity to practice leading
a tour and receive feedback. I posted the materials we produced
during the workshop on a website I created specifically for the
docents - it also included photos, documents and other reference
material they could refer to later. The combination of hands-on
activity, storytelling, small-group discussion, web-based reference
material, and drawing on the knowledge within the group proved to
be very successful. At the end of the workshop the docents felt
well prepared.
“ The Docents still share their joy with the training program. Staff
is extremely pleased with the outcome of
the training and the accompanying assessment tool that
was created. ”

Exploring
Brain Science, Marketing, and Technology for Education
On
June 1, 2004, an eclectic group of people gathered at the Boeing
Leadership Center in St. Louis for a three-day exploration of the
future of education. The workshop provided the venue for 60 educators
from universities, colleges, K-12 schools, and Boeing training and
education units to learn about and practice the application of new
brain science research in learning. I
designed and facilitated this three-day workshop, which featured
lectures by three researchers. Since their lectures emphasized a
new approach to teaching and learning, it was crucial that I design
the workshop activities to be consistent with the theories being
presented. This was important not only for reasons of credibility,
but also to achieve the learning outcomes we desired. As a result,
the participants heard the ideas from the lecturers, experienced
them first hand in the workshop design, and through group projects,
experimented with the application of the concepts themselves.

Brain Science, Marketing, and Technology for Education
“ This
workshop opened my eyes to the potentials for education improvement.
It provoked deep thinking and lively conversation throughout the
3 days. The speakers were engaging and I just wanted to hear more. ”
