UV MAPPING:
Preparing UV shader - Standard execution time: 2 minute (step 37 to 49).

Step 37

37
Select the body of the pencil and open the UV mapping window.
filet
b LMB:select RMB>LMB:UV Mapping

NB: all texturing can be made with Wings3D Materials and rendering in Yafray (or another...).
Here the purpose is to export the UV map to a renderer so we just need the topology of the pencil but many other method are possible...

Step 38

38
Select all faces and choose an Auv chart color. Deselect all.
filet
CtrlA RMB>LMB:AuvChart space

Step 39

39
Continue selecting and coloring parts of the pencil, choose a different color for each; here 'top wood' and 'top lead'
filet
LMB:select parts RMB>LMB:AuvChart

Step 40

40
Vertex, Edges and Face selection are the same as modeling window.
NB: for the 'bottom wood' part don't forget the little inset (=72 faces)...
filet
LMB:select parts ... etc.

Step 41

41
Deselect all.
Select the edge loop along X axis
filet
space e LMB:select 1 edge l

Step 42

42
In Y view, deselect half of the selected loop.
filet
y Ctrl+LMB:deselect

Step 43

43
Return in camera view and mark this edge for cut.
filet
r RMB>LMB:Mark Edge for Cut

Other ways: with hard edges (like step 17 and this 'half edge loop') made in modeling window OR with Material for each parts (and this 'half edge loop') made in modeling window, we jump directly at step 44! ;-)

Step 44

44
Ready to Unfold the pencil! Open the edge menu and choose 'Continue', then 'Unfolding'
filet
RMB>LMB:Continue LMB:Unfolding

Step 45

45
All parts are unfolded in face groups. Create the texture...
filet
RMB>LMB:Create Texture

You can scale, move, rotate face groups
for a better handling of the texture.

Step 46

46
Choose some draw options (here only edges are needed) and close the UV window.
filet
LMB:select options ret LMB:close UV window

Step 47

47
You can see the 'edge' texture applied on the pencil. Open the 'Outliner' window and select the 'Diffuse' map.
filet
Window menu:Outliner LMB:select 'diffuse'

Step 48

48
Export this Diffuse map to a suitable format for you (jpg, tif, bmp, etc)
filet
RMB:Export...

Step 49

49
Export the pencil to your renderer (here 'VRML2 + UV' a free plug-in by D.A. COY)
Yes, I make no 'smooth'... what for? |:¬)
Save the Wings file. That's all.
filet
File menu:Export... File menu:Save

Step 50

50
Open the diffuse map in your best Paint program (with layers) and use it to make shaders for your renderer.
filet
In this  illustration  I simply make 1 bump map,
1 mask for gold text and 3 diffuse maps
(one per pencil). Shaves are made with 'Extract region' of top 'wood' part.

The 'home' and 'exemple' pictures use this method with Wings3D 0.98.20c (modeling), Gimp 1.2.5 (painting), StrataStudioPro 3.9.1 (rendering) and MacOSX 3.3
on Apple G5.

You can return to the normal life... Bye.
