Cross Canada Adventure, Day 7 (Lake Louise to Victoria)
A rough start, more mountains, and the final
destination.
Sleeping in the car was a mistake. It was
cramped and cold, and my legs were sore from last nights mountain hike. I
couldn't stretch them out all the way, which made the pain
worse. So after a few very short hours
of sleep, at 0300 I decided to get back on the road and run the car heater to
warm myself back up. But after driving for about half an hour I was nice and
toasty warm, and started to get sleepy again, so I pulled over again for another
nap.Wash, rinse, repeat. The entire
interior of the car was radiating heat, so getting back to sleep was pretty
quick and easy, but things didn't stay that way for long. Three hours later, at
about 0630 the car was cold again, so I started it up and drove for a while
longer, with the heater running at
max.It was during this leg that I
crossed over into British Columbia, although I didn't notice a sign announcing
the fact. I may have just missed it in the
darkness. After another half hour or so
of driving, I stopped for yet another nap. This time, however, dawn was
arriving, and by the time I woke up again at 0930 I felt pretty good. So it was
back on the road. The drive so far has
consisted of more mountains, a stop at a gas station for a fill-up, and a stop
for a bite to eat. I crossed over the last time zone early in this leg of the
drive, so I once again had to quickly modify all of those clocks (and my watch)
that are easily changed while driving (something I'm getting very good at
now).Otherwise, the drive is pretty
uneventful so far.The scenery is
absolutely lovely, however. I drove through mountains, on bridges over rivers,
through tunnels, up inclines, down declines, and so forth and so forth. I took
some photos while on the go, but you're going to have to wait until I put up a
full photo gallery to see them. The
drive was long, and when I hit the Burnaby area I hit really heavy rush-hour
traffic, so a good section of the last 30 km of travel was
slow. Finally I made it to the ferry,
paid my fee, and got in line to wait. So I fired up my PowerBook, and started
watching a movie.Driving onto a boat
always seems somewhat strange to me. Cars go on roads, and roads are on land.
Cars and water just don't mix, so driving onto a boat is a hugely interesting
event to me (even though it's probably completely mundane to the people who have
lived near a ferry for years). I got a bite to eat aboard the ferry, and am
going to finish watching my movie.Okay
-- got into Nanaimo, and started the drive into Victoria. It was dark at this
point, so there isn't much of interest to report -- but once I arrived in
Victoria, I kept going until I hit "Kilometre 0", and took a
picture: That's
it -- my adventure is at an end. Time to find a hotel room for the
night.
