Cross Canada Adventure -- Prologue
Brad is leaving Ontario and is moving to
Victoria, British Columbia -- by car. It's a roughly 4500km trek, and Brad will
be blogging his travels along the way.
As mentioned in a previous blog entry, I'll be
starting studies towards my Masters of Science in Computer Science (and perhaps
beyond) at this University of Victoria this September. Which is great, except
that I currently live in Bolton, Ontario (near
Toronto).
Now there are a few ways to
get from Toronto to Victoria, however there is only one good way to make the
trek and get close and intimate with Canada and it's people (and get there in
reasonable time), and that's to drive. Besides which, it's also the most cost
effective way to get both myself and my car
there.
So I've been spending the last
few weeks preparing my vehicle for the trip. It's a capable car: a 1997
Chevrolet Lumina sedan LS. It has a good 6 cylinder engine, and only just
recently passed 140 000 km. It's been to the mechanic for fluid changes, basic
maintenance, and a full safety check. I have installed a 300W DC to AC inverter
for charging and powering my various devices. I've bought a FM transmitter for
my iPod (as there are a lot of stretches on the Trans-Canada Highway where there
is little or no radio reception, and I don't want to have to burn MP3 CDs to
listen to the various podcasts I subscribe to). I have a filled 20L gas can in
the trunk, and a 10L water jug. There are bottles of motor oil and engine
coolant in there as well. The back seat has a case of Coke and a few boxes of
granola bars.
Okay -- a few minor
notes. Technically, I'm not trekking
across
Canada. I'm not driving through Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward
Island, New Brunswick, or Quebec. So my apologies to my friends and the good
people in these Provinces for being a bit loose with my titling of this series
of blog entries. However, in my defence, I have driven from Toronto to all of
these Provinces
(except
Newfoundland) in the past, driving this same vehicle -- it was just in my
pre-blog days, and I've just had a really lengthy stop-over in Toronto. Also, I
have no idea of when or where I'll have internet access, so these blog entries
may not be posted in a timely manner. I'll try to enter them into iBlog on a
daily basis, but I may not be able to upload them every day. Sorry -- can't be
helped.
I'm ready, so let the trek
begin!
