ABBY man-yee CHAN - Choreographer, Dancer, Performer


Abby Man-Yee Chan is a graduate of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and a dancer of the Hong Kong City Contemporary Dance Company from 1991 to 1998. She jointly founded "Danseomanie" in 1993 which focuses on introducing dance to teenagers & general public in Hong Kong. In 1995, Abby received a fellowship from the Asian Cultural Council to explore dance in America and presented her work in New York. She co-founded the duet company "Mcmuimui Dansemble" with another well-known Hong Kong choreographer Yeung Wai Mei in 1997. Their work has toured in New York, Tokyo, Seoul, Singapore & Taiwan.

Chan has performed for many internationally renowned choreographers and companies, including American choreographers Rosalind Newman, Sarah Skaggs, Muna Tseng, Bill Young, Sally Silvers, and The Expression Dance Company in Australia. Abby is also active in participating in Hong Kong Arts Festivals productions, including "A Brave New World of Suzie Wong" (2001) & "Rite of Spring" (2003) with Yuri and Company DanciNG as leading performer; "To touch the untouchable sky" (2002) as the Movement Director for Shu Ning Presentation Units and was the choreographer/performer in the production "The Good, the Bad & Scarlett O'Hara"(2004). Abby most recently participated in the latest collaboration, "My Life as A Dancer - the evolution" in 2007.

Her recent choreographic works include Disclosure & Pipe Dream, both were commissioned by the City Contemporary Dance Company. Her choreography has shown in Hong Kong, Taipei, Singapore, Seoul, Tokyo, Sydney & New York.

Besides dance and choreography, Abby is also the project coordinator for the Hong Kong Dance Alliances dance exchange program from 2001. This program has successfully brought in nine US artists to Hong Kong.

Chan received the Hong Kong Dance Award in 2003 for her choreography, 2004 for her performance, and 2006 for the DanceWide HK/NY Dance Exchange project. Chan was included in the Hong Kong Dance Hall of Fame in 2003.

Chan founded CHAN-CAN-DANCE THEATRE in New York in 2005 and performed at Joyce SoHo, the Chashama, the BAX Women Festival, 92 Street Y, Galapagos Arts, Chen Dance Center and the LaMama E.T.C..

In addition to dance, Chan has collaborated and performed with theatre companies like Theatre Ensemble, Trinity Theatre and Shu Ning Presentation Unit in these past few years and showcase her versatility in the performing arts.

She is currently lives in NY and works in both New York and Hong Kong.
