More on sponsored links, Google and the ACCC

You will recall that the ACCC has launched a "world first" legal action against the Trading Post and Google over allegedly misleading or deceptive sponsored links ...

According to Nick Miller writing in the Age on Friday 20 July, the problem is this:

If you typed into Google "Harvey World Travel" in the relevant period, you triggered an ad head "Harvey World Travel" but, if you clicked on the link, you were taken to STA Travel's website.

That would seem like a much more straightforward case, at least against whomever is responsible for placing the "ad".

Mr Miller's article, however, goes on to cite at least 2 other allegations of similar nature.

This seems to fall within the first type of conduct referred to in my earlier post.  It's still not clear whether there's any more substance to the second kind of allegation.

Links to Google's press comments here (Google Australia does not seem to have released a press release).

It doesn't seem possible to link to Mr Miller's article online.
