Drive from Virginia to Georgia

Car trip from Virginia to Florida, day one.

Nancy, her mother, Philip and I left Amherst this morning at about 6:30 am. It was cold, in the upper 20's as we left, and dark as the sun had not risen yet.

Philip drove first, and we went south on US 29 to Greensboro, North Carolina. The day was sunny and the highway dry, so travel was easy. I drove from Greensboro, where we picked up interstate 85. I drove through Charlotte, North Carolina,

then on to Spartanburg, South Carolina, and continuing to Carnesville, in northern Georgia, where we stopped for lunch about 1 pm.

Unfortunately, when we got ready to leave, the car would not start, so I got the phone number of a mechanic from Toccoa and he agreed to come out and take a look at it. He arrived at about 2:30, and discovered my battery was dead. He replaced it, and we were back on the road by 3:30. I drove on to Atlanta (with the sun low and directly in my eyes). I picked up interstate 285, which we drove south to 575, and then merged into 75 south. We continued on later than we intended because of the delay so we drove until 6:30, by which time we had reached Forsythe, Georia, just north of Macon.
Driving conditions were good clear, sunny and dry although it is not a lot warmer here than at home - it does not feel much above 40.
