"on the 6th instant one of those manifestations of the latent frenzy in the Malay character, which every now and then prompts an individual of that race to commit a wholesale slaughter, took place in Singapore. In this case, however, there was only a single victim, and the murderer made no attempt to carry his work of destruction further. There is altogether a certain mystery and romance about the transaction, which it is probable will be cleared up on the trial, but which at present make the murderer a kind of hero among the natives, who are not usually prone to give way to such refinement of feeling as is alleged to have led to the perpetration of the murder, "
