Someone drew my attention to this blog about life in the public service ...
http://publicofficer.blogspot.com/
The blog looks promisingly funny but the humour masks some of the more negative aspects of life in a large organisation, whether it be in the private or public sector. One of my professors, the late Sumantra Ghoshal once asked us "what is the smell of the organisation that you work in?" His point was that most organisations were like Calcutta in the summer --- hot, sultry air that ennervated its citizens. Some organisations were like Fountainbleu in the winter, where the crisp air invigorated the soul. So, is your organisation Calcutta in the summer, or Fountainbleu in the winter?
One big difference that we have over the poor denizens of Calcutta is that we can change workplaces. Or for a select few, we can change the smell of the place to become Fountainbleu in the winter. I have been fortunate to have been given this opportunity to remake an organisation. It has been four months since I began and I can already feel the cool air of my division wicking away the muggy sweat from the air of the parent organisation. I will talk about some of what I have done in future posts. And yes, Denise I promise to post more often.... |
