ABOUT... JONATHAN:

I was born in Glasgow in 1965, but spent my childhood in Morpeth, Northumberland. Later, I attended a boarding school, Gordonstoun in Scotland, before spending about ten years studying geology at the Universities of London and Liverpool.

In 1993, I completed a PhD in sedimentology, then worked for a few years as a geological conservationist and researcher, travelling widely in the UK and Europe. Since 1996 I have been employed in the petroleum industry as a geologist, working in London, Aberdeen and Paris.

I have been writing poetry since a young age, publishing first in school magazines and later in literary magazines, the first of which was 'Grand Piano' in 1984. A selection of my poems were published in the book 'Poetry Introduction 7' (Faber and Faber, 1990).

I also take photographs. You'll find a link to my photo gallery on the home page.

A COMMENT ... ON THIS WEB SITE:

I am not very well-versed (sorry) in poetic forms - but I do know what I like - and some of what I like is on Jonathan Wonham's website. There are some fine poems here in my opinion. I especially like 'This Pure Child' and 'The Life Model'. They do all that I love in a poem - give me a new way of looking at the world in a beautiful, direct and simple way. They are terse and yet say a lot.

ABOUT... THE COVER PHOTO:

Apparatus for removing long words from manuscripts, an exhibit in the Musée Allais at Honfleur. Alphonse Allais was a French humourist who died in 1905. The museum, which is the smallest in France, contains many other interesting exhibits including bags of black confetti for widows (small bags so that they don't enjoy themselves too much).
