A
JAMES BLACK I b c1683 Scotland
This James Black is the oldest known ancestor of the Blacks in Delaware County IN. According to our best information, James was a Scotch wool merchant who moved from Edinburgh, Scotland to Ireland sometime before 1705. The numerous families who moved from Scotland to Ireland and their descendants are commonly referred to as Scotch-Irish.
James I had four sons: John, Anthony, Samuel, and James II.(Vergil F. Black, op. cit.) Samuel was educated at Edinburgh and licensed to preach at Glasgow. He was pastor of Brandywine Manor Presbyterian Church in Chester County PA, but in 1743 he came to visit his brother John in Augusta Co VA, and for 4 yrs. traveled as a missionary among the Scotch-Irish in the area. He later moved to Albemarle County VA where he married and remained for the rest of his life.
Anthony settled in Augusta Co VA and
James II died in Ireland
(Ellen McDonald notes; and records at V.P.I. Archives).
John Black (A1), the direct ancestor of the Indiana Blacks, also
settled in Augusta Co VA with his five sons and four daughters. There
he took lands which he later sold to his sons James III, John, Samuel
(A11), and William.
John Black with two brothers and their families emigrated from Ireland to America in about 1738. They landed on the Delaware River about where Wilmington now stands. They settled on the forks of the Brandywine Creek, in what was known as Penns County or Pennsylvania, remaining there for a few years. One brother afterwards settled in New Jersey. His other brother remained in PA. , but after a few years a portion of his family moved to Albemarle Co VA and from there some moved on to Kentucky near where Lexington now stands.
John Black and his family moved from the
forks of the Brandywine
Creek
and settled in Albermarle Co VA. John & Catherine had five sons and
four daughters. Two sons went west into Kentucky and Tennessee; one of
these sons was never heard of again and it was supposed that he was
killed by Indians. The other brother who went west settled on the
Tennessee River near the town of Knoxville. His descendants were highly
respected citizens in the Knoxville area.

repelling the attacks of Indians.
In 1772 Samuel purchased a tract of 600 acres along the Allegheny
Divide in the eastern boundary of the 7500 acres called Draper
(Montgomery Co VA Deed Book A, p. 39). However, there is no evidence
that he ever lived on this land, for his residence was in Augusta
County were he left his will to be probated in 1783. By this will he
left the Montgomery County property equally to his sons, John and
William Black. The will noted that William Black was already living on
the lands (Chalkley, Chronicles, III, 164). (Kegley, Mary B., EARLY

John and his family moved from Augusta Co VA to Montgomery Co VA in about 1772, settling on Inglis land, a part of which later become Blacksburg, VA. In 1778 or 1779 Indians burned his home; his wife and baby Samuel spent the night in a hollow tree, while John stood guard over them. The next morning John took his wife and baby son to Augusta Co where they remained for six years while John served in the Revolutionary War and until he could rebuild their home. In 1780 John served with the calvary unit under General William Campbell against the Cherokees at Long Island, TN . This campaign and subsequent treaty helped free southwest Virginia from further Cherokee attacks.
John Black remained in Blacksburg and divided his lands in 1827 between his sons Charles who received 173 acres and Alexander 127 acres (Deed Bk II, p 471). The rest of the children moved west, some going to Ohio, others to Washington, Wisconsin, and Missouri. John Black wrote his will in 1828 and it was recorded 6 August 1849 (Montgomery Co Will Bk 8, p 45). He was about 94 yrs old. His sons Andrew, Samuel, John, James and William were each to receive $1 in addition to what they had already received. His lands were already sold to sons Charles and Alexander, but his wife, Mary, was to have the use of the house which would go to Charles at her death. The daughters, Katherine Brown (wife of Michael Brown of Belspring), Jane Ross (wife of James Ross), Mary Crockett (wife of Walter Crockett), and Susanna McDonald (wife of Stephen McDonald) each were to have $70. A son Matthew died before the will was written. Son Samuel Black moved to Montgomery County, OH before 1806 (Brown family papers).
Son Charles Black married Rhoda McDonald and remained in Blacksburg, leaving a will in 1853 indicating that his lands go to sons Edward and John (Montgomery Co Will Bk 8, p 397). These sons sold two tracts, 63 and 16 acres in 1874, to the Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College which was the forerunner of Virginia Polytechnic Institute.
John's son Alexander Black who married
Elizabeth McDonald sold his
interests in Blacksburg and moved to Wisconsin. (Kegley, Mary B., EARLY

William Black was a life-long farmer and "self-made" man. While in Virginia, he was a Circuit Court Judge for 14 years until he moved from the state. He possessed a unusually retentive memory; he could recite with great accuracy entire sermons, speeches, etc. which he had heard.
It was William Black who petitioned the General Assembly of Virginia, requesting a town be established. The petition was addressed to "The Speakers and Members of the General Assembly of Virginia" in the following words:
The petition of William Black humbly sheweth that your petitioner having a piece of ground in a healthy climate , a fertile neighborhood with excellent springs thereon, and agreeably and well situated for a small town, did at the request of a number of his friends and neighbours lay off 38 acres three quarters of an acre and 25 poles of the same, into lots and streets and disposed of a number o the said lots, the purchaser of which hath built and are now building several houses thereon. And your petitioner has been advised to solicit your Honable body to establish by law a town at said place. Your petitioner therefore prays that your Honble House will pass an act vesting the said 38 acres, three quarters of an acre and twenty-five poles of land lying in Montgomery County, in Trustees and establish a town thereon as the same has been already laid off into lots and streets and grant to the holders of the same such privileges as are given to Citizens of other towns in this Commonwealth not incorporated. And your petitioner as in duty bound will pray.
The town was incorporated under the Act
of the General Assembly in
1798
and named Blacksburg. The Trustees were John Black, William Black,
George Rutledge, James P. Preston, Edward Rutledge, John Preston, and
John Henderson (Montgomery Co Deed Bk C, 163). In 1845 Blacksburg had a
population of 250, one Presbyterian Church and one Methodist Church.
William gave land for a school and a cemetery. While living in Virginia
he owned slaves, as was the custom then, but, when his family left for
Ohio, they freed all the slaves.
William Black and his wife Jane sold their remaining lands to George Surface in 1814, excluding from the deed the 38 acres of town land and one acre adjoining the town on the west near the "smith shop" sold to Harman Sifford in 1810 (Montgomery Co Deed Bk E, pp 28. 463).
In 1814 William and his family moved to
Clark Co OH where he
purchased
a tract of land from the government. William and Jane left each of
their sons some 400 acres of land when they died.

James married first _____Martin and secondly Susan _____. His notes

Murray was trusting his memory and it was not too clear in some

was 23 yrs old, and entered 360 acres of land. He erected a log cabin,
eighteen by sixteen feet, with one room, a puncheon floor, and a
clapboard door and roof. There were no neighbors between the Black's
place and Ft. Wayne IN. Game was abundant, especially deer and wolves.
For years there was no school house, no physician, no store, and no
neighbors. The Blacks lived here for nearly 60 years, eventually in an
attractive brick residence. They saw the forest disappear, settlers
come one by one, log cabins spring up and give way to fine residences,
and the area thickly settled and prosperous.
The Blacks were members of the Methodist Church. Mr Black. a
Republican, filled the offices of Justice of Peace, Township Trustee,
and other township offices. The Blacks are buried in Black Cemetery.
