Ooma: Highly recommended if you're tired of paying for your landline!

I don't usually endorse commercial entities but this is one I just have to - Ooma

I heard about Ooma from my son-in-law after I'd told him I was pissed with AT&T and was switching over to TimeWarner broadband phone. I went online and was amazed how great this concept sounded: no monthly charges for phone service (unless you want Premier Service - $12.99/Month), and total control over your phone usage. The only investment is the device that makes it all happen - a one-time $229.00 at Best Buy and other retailers. To make a long story short, I cancelled my TimeWarner order, went out and bought the Ooma core and free scout unit, set it up that night, went online and got my new phone number (I was able to transfer my old number later for a mere $40.00) and I was ready to go! The sound is great, computer doesn't have to be on, you can integrate ALL of your wireless phones, ya got all the perks like free US long distance, caller ID, voicemail, etc. and best of all: NO RIPOFF MONTHLY PHONE BILL! We have a free 60 day trial of Premier, which we're keeping, and it is the ultimate scenario. Not only can you have two separate phone numbers for free, you can blacklist telemarketers, forward calls to your cell phone, change your own ID when you make calls, and a whole lot more. Folks, it's awesome and I highly recommend giving Ooma a try. Ya won't regret it!

Twitter.com - A pretty cool thing!!

Just joined Twitter. Gotta admit that I luv the concept . . .

After hearing about the Twitter craze via the Ashton K story, I decided to check it out. Way cool! The best thing about it is the way that "notables" like Paul McCartney and Lenny Kravitz randomly throw out their twits for all of us to eat up! If you haven't become a Twitterer yet, I suggest ya do so. Hey, and give me a tweet when ya get a chance at Twitter.com

Introducing my newest novel, See Tom Run

I've finally finished my newest novel, See Tom Run . . .

After about a year of writing, I've finished and published my newest novel, See Tom Run . I'm very excited about this mystery/thriller and those who have read it so far have said it is "easily my best!" Here is the synopsis: Tom Grayson returns home from a quick errand to discover that his family and guests have all mysteriously disappeared. Prior to this discovery, he has been tormented with guilt by a secret that only he and a former lover share. Although the two have witnessed a serious crime that remains unsolved, Tom has refused to report the incident since doing so would jeopardize everything he holds dear in life: his wife, kids, and his career as a college art professor. In a desperate search to find his family, Tom embarks on a journey that can only be described as nightmarish and surreal. He eventually meets Erin Myers, an intriguing young woman with a disturbing past. When it becomes increasingly clear that Tom may lose something even more precious than his comfortable existence, his priorities in life shift dramatically. But will it be too late for him to do anything about it?
The book is already available for purchase here . I've also created a free podcast of the novel on iTunes . I'm anxious to hear what you think of it, so please let me know your comments!

POLAROID TO QUIT MANUFACTURING ALL INSTANT FILMS!

I just read a news release from Polaroid announcing that as of this year, they are no longer going to manufacture ANY of their instant films. This is devastating news for many artists and pro photographers . . .

I had a feeling that someday this would happen after I witnessed the demise of Polaroid SX-70 film in March of last year. What I didn't expect then was for this to happen "across the board" and so soon! By deciding to no longer make ANY of their instant films, Polaroid has in essence made obsolete a number of art forms including the image transfer, the emulsion lift and many other alternative process applications that require the use of these films. Furthermore, the instant print that so many photographers STILL rely on for light testing and settings, quick snapshots for clients, passport prints, etc, etc will now have to say goodbye forever to these applications.

This is devastating news for many of us who have embraced instant photography for years and still use it in our art making. As a photography teacher who has already had to phase out SX-70 manipulations for my students in my classes, I will no longer be able to include any of the other Polaroid processes in my curriculum. I am also out of luck for my own art as well.

The only good news (if you can call it that) is that Polaroid is "seeking a partner to acquire licensing rights for its instant film, in hopes that another firm will continue making the film to supply Polaroid enthusiasts." This means that there is a slim chance that someone with a lot of money might be willing to bail us all out of this predicament.

There is a petition you can sign to encourage Polaroid to continue making these films available by clicking here .

I would also like to make a public plea for anyone who might know of some Polaroid "enthusiasts" who might be interested in this undertaking to contact me. Maybe, with enough support we can save our art and take over where Polaroid has left off. Please contact me if you have any info at scott@scottwittenburg.com

New Novel in Progress

I've had a few folks wondering what I've been up to . . .

I've been really busy with school but still managing to keep plugging away at my newest novel. When I get a chance, I'll go into detail what it's about and how it's progressing. Thanks to all of you who have been wondering why I haven't posted anything here in such a long time! Be back soon!

August Update - What a Summer!!!

Hi everybody! It’s been a very busy summer for me! I’ve been working on a new novel that has a sort of Twilight Zone feel to it and focuses on a character that finds himself struggling with a situation that has no easy solution to it and threatens to throw his comfortable life into utter chaos and turmoil. The working title of this psychological thriller is The Guilt Trip, and I’m guessing that I’m about halfway finished. I’ll keep all of you posted on my progress in future newsletters . . .

As for my podcasts, I’ll list the latest happenings by title here:

Coming Soon! Katherine's Prophecy. I'm working on a new podcast of my second novel, Katherine's Prophecy and I hope to have it available on iTunes very soon. You can preview the synopsis here!

The May Day Murders: With over 200 subscribers on iTunes, this mystery continues to attract a strong audience (thank you!). I’ve recently submitted the feed to Podiobooks.com and it should be available there in the very near future. I’ve also added a brief original music track intro and outro to each episode of MDM in iTunes that helps create a bit of a mood as well as prompts the listener with the ending of each chapter.

The Edge: A Podcast Novel : This sci-fi love story is slowly but surely catching up with MDM with regard to subscribers (currently 175 on iTunes.) I may add music intros and outros to this story as well if I get time and can come up with a fitting arrangement.

Photography 101 : This podcast actually made it to Number One in iTunes Visual Arts podcasts the week of August 5th! With over 3,000 subscribers, the podcast continues to pick up subscribers steadily. I’ve switched internet servers to one with much higher file transfer limits, which has enabled me to make episodes always available for download. I’ve also made all of the lessons compatible with video iPods, which was a real chore but necessary to keep my video iPod subscribers happy!

I’ve also made some changes on my website, scottwittenburg.com . I’ve added a Live Chat option for anyone who would like to chat with me from 8:00 PM to 11:00 EST. I’ll try my best to be available during those times and I’d really love to hear from you so let’s chat sometime! I've also added a signup form for readers/listeners to join my mailing list.

That’s about it for now. I start teaching again in two days, which will no doubt curtail my writing and podcasting time somewhat. But hey, I love teaching and I love to write so I will keep doing both until my last breath!

In closing, I’d like to encourage all of you to leave comments about my work – it means a lot to me to know what your thoughts are, good and bad. Besides the comments option in the iTunes directory for my podcasts, you can comment at my website as well.

Until next time, take care of yourselves and thanks for your support! Without you, this would all be meaningless fodder!

Regards,
Scott

Introducing The Edge, my newest published novel!

The Edge, the first novel I wrote, is now published. You can read more about this sci-fi novel here . . .

I wrote The Edge back in 1983 while I was living in NYC. This sci-fi novel was my very first attempt at writing fiction and has basically been laying around in a box while I've been working on getting my newer books published. I eventually decided to resurrect the original manuscript, which had actually been typed out on an old Royal typewriter! I scanned the original pages into my Mac and began the arduous re-editing process. The result is this sort of vague pre-cursor to Katherine's Prophecy in a round-about way. (I can assure you that the story and plot are totally different, though!)

I hope that some of you out there will give this "old classic" a read. It's available now at Barnes and Noble and Amazon.com . Please go here to read the synopsis, download a preview and/or purchase. I'm really excited about this book and can't wait to hear what my readers have to say about it!

Introducing The May Day Murders Podcast!

My new blog contains the latest info on my novels and how you can subscribe to my new Podcast on iTunes!

I created a new blog dedicated exclusively to my writing adventures. On this blog, my new Podcast is available, which I plan on updating periodically. I'm actually considering creating a chapter by chapter reading of my novels, but this would be not only insanity but very time consuming. Who knows? (you can also download, view, and subscribe to my podcast on iTunes. Just go to the Music Store, to Podcasts, to Arts and Entertainment>Books.

My first published novel (!)

Finally, I'm getting my second novel, Katherine's Prophecy, published!

I'm actually in the final stages of getting Katherine's Prophecy published after all of this time (see 10-08-03 entry). The original manuscript for this book was more or less completed in 1995 but I've since converted it into a workable version on my Mac (it once resided on my old Smith Corona word processor) and have worked on it off and on over the past nine years. I'm doing the final, final edit of the story and polishing up the cover art (note how the cover has evolved since 10-08-03). When I'm finished with everything and it's available to the public, I'll let anyone who's interested know. A synopsis of the novel and progress for the big event can be accessed here. Or you can simply go directly to the site to check it out by clicking here.
