Stepping Out

Basic floor framing is accomplished,
a relic is retired,
and new help arrives.

The barn/house renovations are going slowly but steadily now. Bruce is a bit overwhelmed with all the work, I think. Don't blame him -- I would be too. This is a hell of a big job to take on by yourself.

Now that the foundation is in place, he was able to start framing up the flooring for the new building, with some help over last weekend by Eric (who now has another job, but is stopping in when he can).

Then, this week and this weekend, Bruce and a new weekend helper, Matt, have been doing the framing for the flooring:

(Matt's the kid in the red shirt, performing acrobatics between the joists.)

Today, Bruce and Matt are putting down the first of the plywood flooring. It's odd to see someone finally standing on the Big Hole. I almost feel as if we'll eventually have building there. :)

The old window air-conditioner from the living room has been moved to The Pit (aka, the new basement, when the building is done). Did Bruce and Elric carry it down? No. Heaven forbid. Why do something the simple way when you can use a...

... giant machine to do the work for you? Thatta, boys.

And so our old friend, who kept me cool all these long hot summers for the last fifteen years, is safely put to rest in the new basement. Ya never know. We may need it again. Yes, we'll have central air in the new building, but not in the old -- so ... I'm holding onto it. Summers in New England are getting notoriously hot and long -- and who says there's no global warming?

A sidenote: This air conditioner was from Macdonald & Doyle , who bought it while they were stationed in Panama when Macdonald was in the Navy. And it still works. Amazing.
