Primate Gallery - primate photos, pictures and paintings

About the Primate Gallery

The Primate Gallery project began in 1994 and was formally launched on the World Wide Web in April of 1995. The purpose of this project is to provide a central source for collecting, digitizing, and distributing primate images. Primate illustrations, paintings, photographs, and sounds are provided for educational use, primate identification and studies in taxonomy. The Primate Gallery is administered by Tim Knight who manages Web services in a scientific institute at the University of Washington.

History of the Primate Gallery

In 1994, I conducted an extensive search for primate images on the Internet. At that time there were no books that had information and images of all living primate species. Unfortunately, I only found a few good primate photos and no organized image database on the Internet. The Primate Gallery is an effort to collect images of all living primate species and distribute them for free on the Web. When the site was launched in early 1995 it was one of the first Web sites focusing on primatology and the first primate image database.

The Goal of the Primate Gallery

My goal is to present high quality photos of all living primate species in an online database that is interactive, fun, and informative. These are some of my objectives:

1) illustrate - through images and text - the great diversity of primates species of the world.
2) inspire people to actively support primate conservation
3) provide a learning resource for all age groups
4) disseminate current information provided by scientists
5) give photographers an opportunity to share their wonderful images with a wide audience

The Primate Gallery is currently in development and many new images are being adding each month. I am in the process of digitizing slides and photos from my personal collection, but my collection is not comprehensive, so I need your help. If you are interested in contributing to this Web site or have any suggestions about improving the information that is provided, please send E-mail to .

Thank you for visiting the Primate Gallery.
