I
anticipated exactly how this image would turn out as soon as I peered
up from the shaded bottom of this rappel in Mystery Canyon. I used
a wide-angle 17-24mm lens metered for the sky and bracketed one stop for
multiple exposures, and still out of the numerous shots, this was the
only one that really lived up to my expectations. With wisps of clouds
interacting on the towering walls and the perfect silhouette of the Canyoneer,
it all makes for a truly dynamic photograph. If I was shooting
digital with a model as my subject, I could have stood there giving directions
until I got this shot, but I find that over directing of action to meet
my needs subtracts from the total experience of Adventure Photography,
although the occasional request to hold-still still remains inevitable
especially during low light action, I think that too much more than that
can end up being obstructive in ‘extreme sports’ photography.
