Harney Letter - October 18, 1838

Prairie du Chien
October 18th, 1838

As business is having to close, and the announcement of your decision will scatter to their homes, all not resident here, I am desirous of having my business in such shape, as to avoid delay,
With this view, I take the liberty of calling your attention to two half breeds, for whom I am concerned, Caroline Harney and Ke-sho-ko, her mother: the former is the daughter of Major Harney of the Army, and lives near Green Bay, sometimes with her mother, sometimes not, as she gets support: Her mother lives as wife, with Pierre, (generally called Peerish) Carbeunau: he is poor, illiterate, imprudent: altho not a man of ill conduct, still idle and not fit to have charge of money: he lives on preemption speculations, and what he can get from treaties: he got something from the Menomonees and as I am instructed, spent it imprudently: Under these circumstances I feel that a guardian is necessary for both Caroline Harney and her mother, and I have selected Judge Law of Green Bay: if it meets your approval: his character, experience, integrity and property, point him out as the proper person, and I enclose a recommendation, from respectable individuals: I have requested Col. Broadhead to do me the favor of presenting this, and ascertaining your views to the acceptance of Judge Law, that if they be unfavorable, I may take other measures in season.
