Call for Participation for May 2009


Meeting Theme - Transforming 21st Century Instrumental Music Educators

 

The Instrumental Music Teacher Educators organization invites proposals for participation in the Third IMTE Colloquium to be held May 14-17, 2009 at the Deer Creek Resort in Mt. Sterling, Ohio.

IMTE is particularly interested in proposals related to the instrumental music teacher educator's role in developing and influencing pre-service and in-service instrumental music teachers’ philosophical, curricular, pedagogical, and assessment practices related to:

  • Student-centered instruction
  • Developing comprehensive musical understandings in every student
  • Changing the culture of instrumental music education
  • The importance of the teaching/learning process in a product-driven profession
  • Lifelong musical participation
  • Increasing the influence of instrumental music education methods instruction/instructors
  • Defining/describing pedagogical content knowledge in instrumental music teacher education
  • Recruiting instrumental music teachers and instrumental music teacher educators
  • The ongoing professional development of teachers in ways that move them beyond the traditional instrumental music education paradigm

Proposals must be submitted via email as a Word attachment to the IMTE Steering Committee (Robert Gardner at rdg13@psu.edu) on or before January 15, 2009. The email should include the “type” of presentation proposed (see below). The Steering Committee will notify submitters regarding participation by March 1, 2009.

Types of participation:

Full Group Interactive Session
Presenter will have approximately 40 minutes to present a topic and include group interaction and discussion. Submit a 250-300 word abstract of the session and include a brief description of the interactive approach to be utilized. Include a reference list with the proposal as well. A limited number of full Group Interactive Sessions will be chosen on topics of interest to the group at large.

Roundtable Discussion Paper
Presenter will have approximately 20 minutes to present the paper and facilitate participant discussion at a roundtable. Submit a 250-300 word abstract of the paper and include a reference list.

“15 Minutes of Fame” Presentations
Presenters will have 15 minutes (time will be carefully monitored in order to be fair to all presenters) to present the key concepts of the paper or idea. Several “15 Minutes of Fame” presentations will be presented together followed by a discussant who synthesizes, critiques and leads discussion of the concepts and ideas. Submit a 250-300 word abstract of the session and include a reference list. Complete presentation outline must be made available to the discussant by May 1, 2009.

"Birds of a Feather" Lunch Facilitator
Presenters will facilitate a lunch discussion on a topic of interest. Multiple “Birds of a Feather” lunch session will run simultaneously. Submit a topic title including questions for discussion.

Doctoral Student Forum
This session will offer doctoral students the opportunity to present a paper for approximately 20 minutes. A discussant will respond to the paper and facilitate questions for another 20 minutes. Full paper must be made available to the discussant by May 1, 2009.

Volunteer to be a “15 Minutes of Fame” or Doctoral Student Forum Discussant
