Ice Age, Global Warming, Bird Flu?
With appalling weather predicted for this winter,
an Avian flu epidemic now seemingly inevitable and global warming perhaps it's
time to suffle off this mortal coil now
It is a marketing truism that ' fear sells
product ' and this year certain things will be flying off the shelves. Can it be
a coincidence that just as Roche has a vaccine to flog us shock headlines are
being flung at us daily about this dreadful pandemic? Well cynical old me - slap
my wrist and deduct 2 karma points, go directly to Purgatory, do not pass
Nirvana, do not collect enlightenment. But let's look at the
facts.
Since this virus was first reported
there have been 60 deaths - count 'em 60. I don't know what the world population
was at last count but my guess is that 60 is an infinitesimally small percentage
of our overall population. And those 60 come from people that live in very close
proximity to their poultry. What happened to the SARS pandemic? Still if they
keep scaring us long enough and often enough the placebo effect will kick in
and, hey presto! a self-fulfilling
prophecy.
Poor old Gaia how is she
going to maintain some balance if she's not allowed to wipe out a few hundred
thousand with the odd pandemic now and again.
