Online Courses
Introduction to Physical Anthropology and
Introduction to Cultural Anthropology

Taught by Adam Wetsman

Course Description / Transferability / G.E. Requirements

These are the same courses as Anthropology 101 and Anthropology 102, except offered online. The course description, transferability, and general education requirements are the same. See the Anthropology 101 and 102 links for more information. Be warned! Some schools do not accept transfer of online courses. Check with a counselor to make sure that this course will transfer.

Adding Courses (Please read)

The only way to add my online courses is through the Rio Hondo registration process. I do not grant adds FOR ANY REASON. If the sections are full, then you will have to take the course another time. There may be several sections offered each term. There are many students who need these classes to graduate on time, who must take the classes online due to work schedules, and who have other compelling reasons why they need to get added. Attempting to prioritize such issues is something I simply will not do. Please do not email me asking me to make an exception; none will be granted.

Overview of Course Requirements

These courses are divided into multiple units which must be completed about every two weeks (or every week for short terms like those offered during the summer). Each unit contains a few hours worth of audio/video lectures and accompanying reading assignments. Grading for the units is based upon a unit test, homework, and participation in online discussions. Each unit can be completed in six to ten hours. Some bonus activities and extra credit are available as well. For Anthropology 101 (Introduction to Physical Anthropology), there is a six-page paper assigned for the class based upon observations of primates at a zoo and limited fact-finding about the species observed. For Anthropology 102 (Introduction to Cultural Anthropology), there is a six-page paper assigned for the class based upon interviewing someone about his or her religious beliefs and limited fact-finding about the religion. Note: exact course requirements and grading standards are based upon a syllabus available at the beginning of each term.

Students do not need to be on campus at all to successfully complete the course. There are no midterms or a final, only unit tests, homework, and discussions. The ability to work ahead is somewhat limited since the units are not made available all at once.

Many students find online classes quite challenging because the workload appears to be excessive.  Be warned!  If you do not have the discipline to keep yourself on track for the semester, you might consider taking this class in a standard, on-campus format.

Getting Started / Logging On / Important Deadline

You will be allowed to log on once the term begins. Go to http://online.riohondo.edu/index.htm and follow the directions to log on. Contact me immediately if you have trouble through my Rio Hondo email at awetsman@riohondo.edu. When the semester begins, simply log on to the class website and follow the directions. You will not be given access until the term begins. You must log on the class website and complete the Orientation Quiz during the first week of the term or YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO CONTINUE IN THE CLASS. This may result in a "W" grade.
