Asheville 06

Thanks to Ken, Kim, Marcel, and Wes for these images. We had 26 people on this trip, and it was the best ever.

This is half the crew.
Our garage was better stocked than most bike shops.
Out the back door,
or out the front door,
it seems every morning starts with a climb.
It's a middle chain-ring, 45 minute climb.
With temps near 45, a warm up felt good.
The occasional downhill was a welcome break.
Gathering at the top, talking about the downhill to come.
We had to keep moving to stay warm,
but the downhill was fantastic, with banked turns,
scenic overlooks,
and fast open stretches.
The beautiful colors were breathtaking,
as was hitting 24 mph on the slopes.
If you had the guts, you could pedal for more speed
The crew at Dupont.
Kevan picks a rock to take back home.
View from the quarry rim.
Holly takes a break.
Dropping out of the quarry,
we hit our first slick rock.
Marty is all smiles.
Holly dodges a sudden drop. The leaves hid the rocks.
Valerie was our very excellent guide for the day.
Kevan climbing Cedar Mountain.
Kim was keeping our guide in sight.
Rich weaves across the solid rock.
We stopped here for lunch
because of the wonderful view.
Now the downhill race starts.
Rudy is ahead of the pack - for now.
These rock paths go on forever.
Sometimes the transverse can be slick if wet.
Ken was loving the challenge.

If I go fast my feet won't get wet.
Barry contemplates our stream crossing.
Ice cold water and a slimy green bottom. Stay focused.
Trying to maintain balance with the current was difficult.
Half way across, my feet went numb.
On to the next adventure.
You could hear the water's roar through the woods.
Right away people began climbing the falls.
Above was a second set of falls.
Ken crossed the stream under the falls.
Inside looking out.
OK, enough with the cold water.
Dave contemplates getting his feet warm.
Ah, warm feet.
