What is a Penny Social?
Just Google the phrase "Penny
Social" or "Chinese Auction" and you will find a lot of
articles and photos of this fun and time-honored tradition. Young and old alike
love the idea of winning a lot of fun prizes for very little money.
How does it work? You begin by buying a set of 25 tickets -
often for as little as a dollar. Small auction prizes are set up on tables with
a cup or bag next to each item. If it's an item you want to win, simply drop
one of your numbered tickets into the cup or bag. When the auction calling
begins, if your number is picked - you win that item!
Past Penny Socials have been a bit hit here at St. Mary's! Here we see
people placing their bids.
Items range from
small toys to household items, jewelry, cosmetics, tools, crafts, DVDs, snacks
and much more. You can put as many of your tickets in for each item as you want
- because the more tickets you put in, the better your chance to win that item.
Some people have blogged about their strategies for winning big at the Penny
Social. And all agree that you need to get there early to see all the goods,
and make sure you bid on everything you want to win. Those who really clean up
are the ones who know how to bid!
It's easy for kids, fun for teens, and a great afternoon for adults alike.
Food is also available for sale, and bigger ticket raffles are also held for
large items like TVs, appliances and more.
St. Mary of Perpetual Help hosts a Penny Social every year - and this year
is no exception.
Sunday, March 4th we will open the doors at 11:00 a.m. and the auction
calling will begin at 12:30 p.m.
In addition to the Penny Social Prizes, we will have a Raffle for bigger items,
and a Grand Raffle to win REALLY hot items like a flat screen TV! You'll want
to stay for lunch - we have lots of food and drinks for sale, too.
Come early to stake out your seat, get all your bids in for the Penny Social
items, and purchase your raffle tickets! Auction calling begins at 12:30 and
you must be present to win.
The Penny Social is open to everyone - please come out and bring your
friends and neighbors. You don't have to be a member of the church to join in
the fun and to WIN BIG!
