Duty time and bidding lines
Time matters in the airline business
Today, our class learned about how to avoid working too much, and how to bid for "lines" which allow us to avoid working as much as possible.
We also learned how to calculate takeoff minimums and alternate airport filing requirements.
We watched a video about the dangers of excessive automation for pilots. As pilots-in-training for the Beechcraft 1900D, we don't have to worry about that particular problem, since the 1900Ds we'll be flying don't have either GPS or autopilots. We are "Otto the pilot."
When asked by one of the instructors how things were going, I answered, "I'm enjoying it. It's challenging, but that's part of the enjoyment." One of my fellow students accused me of insincerity, but that's really the way I feel. Rising to the challenge is much of the enjoyment of any worthwhile endeavor. See the Amelia Earhart quote in the first entry in this Airline blog category.
