Class finished; studying for FAA examination
Earl finishes the CFI class but must wait a week
to be examined
The final hectic week of CFI class found me
polishing maneuvers, tweaking my instructor patter, and perfecting short and
soft field landings. I didn't get much time in the Piper Arrow in which I'll
have to demonstrate my Complex Airplane abilities, but I get one more ride in it
next week to make sure I properly solidify my memories of speeds and power
application, plus all the details regarding flaps and gear which differ wildly
from the Cessna 172.
Reading through
all my notes and chair flying through all my maneuvers will consume many
evenings this next week. I'm probably as ready now as I'll ever be, but perhaps
the week's wait (until the 28th of July, 2007) will be a
bonus.
My final act before leaving FNL
(Fort Collins/Loveland airport) was to take the Garmin 1000 glass panel-equipped
Cessna 172R I'll be flying for my final examination up for a 1.7 hour workout of
my toughest maneuvers, plus a lot of takeoffs and landings. All were infinitely
better than when I started, and very likely up to snuff for the
examination.
Being a CFI will be the
first opportunity I've had to teach a physical skill to someone else. I've done
the intellectual thing so often in the past that it'll be interesting to see how
well I can act as a physical model rather than an intellectual one. As the
formerly uncoordinated kid who was always last to be chosen for sporting events,
I'll finally (about time!) have a chance to be graceful and skillful at
something physical, and then pass that grace and skill on to another
person.
