Listen Again or Audio On Demand
Here are the details of the
Listen Again
or Audio On
Demand (AOD) feature which we can now reveal
will go live on Monday 5th April
2004.
First some background - the AOD service currently
featured on the other BBC Networks (e.g. Radio 4) makes very heavy demands on
our colleagues in BBC Radio Interactive and they warned that they could not
sustain a full BBC 7 schedule as well. We felt it was important to offer you the
full range of BBC 7 programmes, so they developed a simplified form of AOD,
which was easier to maintain. I'm delighted with what they have come up with,
and I hope you will agree when you see
it.
We decided to base the process on the
What's On information which normally looks at future programmes. For AOD we
captu! re! the content of those pages after transmission and use them as a
platform for launching the AOD
service.
The rules by which we are now
able to provide AOD for all our programmes require that they can only be heard
after conventional transmission. For complicated technical reasons I am afraid
you will not be able to hear "today's" programmes on AOD until "tomorrow" and
then you will have a further five days to hear them, before they get replaced
with new recordings.
We will be delighted
to receive your comments (good and bad) from 5th April onwards - we will give a
specific email address or I guess a dedicated thread on the Message Board could
be used as well. I'm sure you'll appreciate that we may not be able to enter
into correspondence on particular aspects of the system - the BBC 7 team is
small in number and very busy getting all those future programmes ready for you
to enjoy! However we will note all your comments and consider them in the design
of! f! uture AOD improvements. Please bear with us if we have a few glitches in
the first days of the service - I'm sure you will agree it was worth waiting
for!
