The Impossible Dance

In 1940’s Buenos Aires, a handful of people re-invented their parents tango into a form that became known as the “style of the North”. The brilliance of their creation enabled two dancers to touch magic in deep and profound ways. Our link to this form is tenuous – more accessible styles emerged in the city center, but more importantly, it is largely ignored by the current generation involved in their own re-creation of the dance. The remaining few people with direct links to this form are elderly, and suspiciously, complicit in its lack of transmission.

This documentary follows the passion of Tomas, an Argentinean with unparalleled access to the few remaining masters who were there during that special period, in an attempt to preserve the essence of this style before it before it fades from memory.

This documentary is generously funded by a grant from the the Canadian government and has also been declared as a project of "national historic signifigance" by the secratary of culture of Argentina. It will be premiered at the 2007 Portland Tango Festival
