Volcanic Fissure
The area to the west of Ásbyrgi is known as Kelduhverfi.
Here we are on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and the two tectonic plates are moving apart leaving many fisures like this.
Many of the most visible features here were formed during a period of intense activity in 1975.
The owner of the guesthouse we used said that as a teenager she would sit on a hill and watch the ground moving in earthquakes.
