3d Generation grape grower christens Skaneateles’
first winery
Jim
Nocek never wanted to be in the grape growing business.
Jim
was raised in a family that had been growing grapes in the Fredonia area for
several generations, beginning with his grandparents who brought their skills
to this country from Eastern Europe.
Jim first trained as a scientist then pursued a career in the corporate world. He soon was searching for a way
out of that path and eventually found himself migrating back to grapes. He enjoys wine, but not so much the
grapes, so he began searching for a way to combine his vast knowledge of the
grape growing process with wine making.
He
began looking for a farm in the Skaneateles area and about fifteen years ago
purchased property on West Lake Road across from Winding Way. The land was not especially fertile as
far as agricultural land, but featured a significant slope, which helps flow
cold air away from the grapes, a key to sustaining a vineyard in this cold
climate where the fruit has such little time to ripen.
Grapes
were planted in 2001 and the first crop bore fruit in 2005. Last fall, Anyela’s Vineyards,
Skaneateles’ first winery, officially opened for business with a signature wine
tasting room featuring spectacular views of Skaneateles Lake.
Growing
grapes in Skaneateles poses significant challenges due to the high elevation,
Jim says. The vineyard is at 1,100
feet above sea level, compared with 600 feet in most of the other Finger
Lakes. This can cause the
temperature to be 5 degrees colder in the winter, which puts exceptional stress
on the vines.
To
combat this problem, Anyela’s cane prunes the vines and buries them before the
winter which preserves the crop.
The vines have developed well and the winery has produced Pinots and
Rieslings, among other wines. The
Pinots are light with strawberry and rasberry flavors while the Riesling
features a nice peach flavor, Jim said.
Unlike
some Finger Lakes varieties, Anyela’s wines are produced exclusively with
grapes grown on their farm. This
helps assure the quality of the grape used to produce the wines. Prior to this year, Anyela’s wines were
crafted at an alternate location.
The 2008 vintage is the first to be made and bottled in Skaneateles.
Anyela’s
is at 2433 West Lake Road.
