Country Club program seeks funds to increase fleet of teaching prams

Janice Wiles, her son Luke Wiles and Skaneateles Country Club Commodore John Henry discussed the Club’s sailing school July 9.

Wiles, of Maryland is in her twenty-second year teaching teaching sailing at the Club.

The young sailors are taught boat handling skills, boating safety, knots, rigging and basic rescue.  The Certified instructors hold apple races, pirate days, and play sailing capture the flag to keep the teaching environment fun.  As the young sailors advance, they can become a part of the Club’s sailing team and learn to develop tactical race and boat handlign skills.

The program started in 1961 and has been teaching Skaneateles youths age 6 to 18 to sail ever since.  John Henry shared pictures and other historical memorabilia from the school.  He shared the club’s register from the first school.  Many of those who were in the first class remain active and well-known members of the community.

Over the past few years, enrollment in the program has increased significantly.  This year, the school has 115 children signed up to teach kids to learn to race in four different classes based on ability.

To accommodate the increased enrollment, the Sailing School is raising money to purchase two new sailboats for its beginner and intermediate sailors.  The drive seeks to raise $3,000.00 to purchase  used optimist prams.

Sunrise helps Books for the World pack pallets for South Africa

President John Rooney stands with the pallet of books our club sponsored for Books for the World Saturday, July 18, 2009 at Bossong’s Commercial Delivery Facility.

The books have been rejected by the consignee due to various minor damage.

About 15 volunteers from our club, the Evening Club, Tully, DeWitt and Eastwood sorted the books at the facility at 6713 Picard Drive off East Molloy Road and near the Marine Training center south of the airport.

The books collected for this pallet were gathered, in part at the Skaneateles Library’s annual book sale.  The pallet and the cartons used for the project were made possible by our club’s sponsorship approved at the July Club Assembly.
