Rotarians pull off another successful Pancake
Breakfast
Skaneateles Rotary club’s 41st
Fathers Day Breakfast was a great success! On a rainy Sunday morning, the
Skaneateles Rotarians gathered with SHS Interactors,
Youth Exchange Students, friends, Boy Scouts, Community Bands, Fireman and
others to honor the fathers from far and wide with a breakfast fit for a
king. Approximately 3,200 were served with over 10,000 pancakes, a few
hundred dozens of eggs, sausages galore, gallons and gallons of coffee, milk
and juice. A wonderful
time had by all; volunteers and guests!
Despite the soggy weather, club members
hawked our tractor raffle tickets in the rain in front of the Arena. In spite of the weather, we managed to
take in close to $1,500.
Thanks to the lucky winner electing the cash prize of $1,000.00 instead
of the tractor, we have netted closed to $500.00 to support our many service
projects this year!
Once again Boy Scout Troop 61 sold their
flares for the upcoming Independence Day flare night on the lake. Scouts also provided much help and
assistance in making the event run smoothly.
Baltimore Woods shows youths how to connect with
nature in the city
When she was a child, Patty Weisse recalls exploring the natural world around her while
playing in the fields and woods, or wading in nearby watering holes and creeks.
Weisse,
director of Baltimore Woods Nature Center in Marcellus and past-president of
the Marcellus Rotary Club, discussed Baltimore Woods’ Nature in the City
program June 24.
While many who live in and
around the suburbs still have a taste of the woods and if not are able to whet
their appetite for the natural world at nature centers such as Baltimore Woods,
those who are growing up in the City of Syracuse generally do not. Rather, they are growing up in a
virtual world which,
Weisse described, is to the brain as
akin to a diet of artificial sweeteners.
After listening to the
reactions of children who visited the Center on field trips, Weisse says Baltimore Woods decided to look for
opportunities to provide similar experiences in and around the city of
Syracuse.
Studies have shown that
children who grop up exploring nature develop a
stronger sense of self and stewardship for the world around them. As Baltimore Woods looked more closely
at Syracuse, they discovered that the city is home to a wealth of parks and
green spaces.
In 2002, beginning with Elmwood
Park, Baltimore Woods developed “Nature in the City,” a project for elementary
age children at Roberts Elementary School. The program offers a series of class-room
and hands-on experiences to strengthen youths’ connectins
to the natural world, teach critical thinking through hands-on activities and
develop youths’ stewardship for their neighborhood green spaces.
The program has won numerous
awards and has recently partnered with ‘Say Yes to Education’
