News & Notes

Save the Date for Service opportunities in May and June

If you have not already signed up for a special service opportunity May 2 and 3, please let Tom or John Hennessy know.

Spearheaded by Skaneateles Rotarian Peter Adams, and members of the Skaneateles Rotary Club, Skaneateles Rotarians will replace and upgrade the fencing at Simms Field, the Little League baseball field in the northwest corner of the Upper Austin Park fields adjacent to the Simms Pavilion.  The fencing is needed to protect both bench areas and the bleachers from foul and/or errant balls.  David Lee again has volunteered his considerable expertise in designing and supervising the installation!

There are many ways to assist with this important project ranging from refreshments to getting your hands dirty with the actual fence installation.  Sign-up sheets were circulated at the April 16 Assembly and will be circulated again this week.   If you are unable to attend, please let me know ASAP.  This is an ideal opportunity for our clubs to work together to help make Skaneateles a better place!

In addition to the ball field project, mark your calendars for the Pancake Breakfast June 21 and also for set up the day before, Saturday, June 20 and break down the day after, June 22.  In addition to doing everything we can to help the evening club maintain this hugely successful event, our club is again selling raffle tickets for a lawnmower/cash raffle.  This year Daryle has negotiated with Bobbett Implement to obtain a 42-inch automatic transmission lawnmower which promises to be more attractive to ticket buyers.  Raffle winners who don’t want a new mower can choose in the alternative $1,000 cash.

Tickets are $5 or 3 for $10 or 7 for $20.  Daryle Pickering passed out tickets to all those in attendance April 16.  If you were unable to make the meeting, please contact Daryle directly.

Books for the world on the move to permanent location in South Africa

Thanks to the generosity of partner transport companies; New England Motor Freight (NEMF) and AAA Cooper Transportation (ACT),  the LASERTransit warehouse facility and Welch Allyn Inc., six pallets of children books and textbooks are making the first leg of their trip to South Africa.

The books are being transported to Houston to become a part of sea-container load headed to Johannesburg SA.  Three pallets of these books are specifically ear-marked for the Rotary Club of Benoni-Aurora who are stocking the shelves of the JS Malaza Primary School library and the John Wesley Community Center.
