Chief Perkins: Skaneateles Police seeks community input

The Skaneateles Police Department wants to hear from the community.

Chief Lloyd Perkins encouraged our members to spread the word that our local police department is always looking for feedback from the community to be sure it is providing the best possible service to its constitutents. Chief Perkins updated our club April 2 on the new police station and other projects the department has been engaged in recently.

The Village has put plans for a new, badly-needed police station on hold for the time being.  Although the plans have been worked out, the economy cannot support such a large expenditure at the present time.   Instead, the department has renovated portions of the former SAVES building to accommodate some of the space needs.

One new program the department is proud of is the “Child is Missing” program.  Through this program, if a child is missing, the department can coordinate phone calls to thousands of phone numbers within a specified radius of the last place the individual was seen.  This can help locate a child quickly and efficiently.

Another program is designed to help veterans.  Historically, law enforcement agencies haven’t responded well with soldiers returning from service in foreign wars.  Working with the local Veterans Administration, the Skaneateles Police Deparmtent now has a database of veterans.  If a veteran is pulled over or is the subject of a call, the department calls the VA pre-arrest.  The idea is to quickly determine whehter the veteran is having a problem that requires immediate intervention before involving that individual with the legal system and allowing the problem to continue.

Chief Perkins also updated our club on the status of the truck enforcement.  For budget reasons, the department has decided to cut back its truck enforcement for the foreseeable future.  On a positive note, however, the Chief advised that New York City Mayor Bloomberg has called for the removal of the city’s trash by rail rather than by trucks for environmental reasons, which is expected to significantly reduce the truck traffic problems in the village.

Update from the front lines

The following is from an e-mail to Alice Purdy and her Girl Scout Troop from Dustin King on behalf of the platoon which her troop adopted.

Hey Alice,

Yes we have been getting all the care packages you have sent us and we are really enjoying them.  You have sent us so many boxes we are having to share with the rest of the company.  One man can only eat so many girl scout cookies.  Its nice though since the other guys dont get as much as us.  Sadly they dont have a motivated girl scout troop sponsoring them.  Keep it up!!!!. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart, for myself and my soldiers.  1LT Browning is very busy, but ill make sure he sends you a response in the near future.

As far as items for the boxes...... you are doing just fine.   I cant really think of much else the guys want.  They have plenty of snack food and munchies thx to you.  Its awesome because where we are at does not have a store, so for some of the soldiers in our platoon you are their only source of american goodies.

Please tell your girls thank you for all their hard work.  We have your newspaper article pinned up in our central working station where everyone goes through, so they can see how hard those little women

are working to help out some soldiers and their country.

The local children appreciate anything they can get.  Hard candy and things that will last a while are optimal.  Any small toys, no matter how small are appreciated.

P.S. We never get tired of beef sticks.
