JB Allred carves out successful consulting,
manufacturing business
J.B.
Allred relishes living on the edge.
Allred
left his job in research and development at Welch Allyn for the life of an
entrepreneur. J.B. left
Welch Allyn in 1993 to form Allred Allred & Associates, an engineering
product development and manufacturing firm in Elbridge, NY. Allred addressed our club on February
26, 2009.
Unlike
the risky image many have for entrepreneurs, Allred describes life the edge as
a very deliberate, calculated existence.
The edge, he says, is the boundary between two dissimilar things such as
the edge between the forest and the fields or the beach and the ocean.
For
Allred & Associates, the edge is between a large and a small company. It offers all computer assisted
equipment and state-of-the-art technology more common at a big company, but has
the ability to react quickly and creatively to problems, traits more common among
small companies.
Allred
got his start as an entrepreneur almost by accident. While building a replica of a 1923 airplane, he was unable
to find anyone with a machine suitable to carve out the propeller so he
designed the machine himself.
The
rest, as they say, is history. The
machine today is used by violin, viola, cello, contra bass and guitar makers
worldwide to carve the shape for their instruments.
Soon
after achieving success with the carving machine, J.B. left his job in research
and development at Welch Allyn to form Allred Associations. Now, 15 years later, the company has 15
patents, 40 employees and has added two new companies to the mix.
Fresh
off his success with the wood carving machine, Allred and his company began
tackling carbon fiber products.
Carbon is structurallly rigid and light weight but can be very difficult
to work with.
Despite
the inherent difficulties, the company figured out a way to machine carbon and
now machines a broad range of products for various applications, including the
gondola set for a blimp, robotic arms, motorcycles, yachts and even the
interior of a small, privatley-owned submarine! Recently, the company also produced a carbon fiber
surfboard, a small bridge for military use that is 35 feet long and can carry
32 soldiers and an ultralight ladder.
Allred
& Associates is also involved with Propulsive Wing, LLC, a new company that
is working to develop a commercially successful high-lift, high payload flying
wing plantform. Instead of using
external propellers, the airplane uses fans embedded in the wings. The small unmanned plane has a 7 foot
wingspan and is ideal for flying over factories to monitor air quality, among
other things.
