Local
‘Farmer’s daughter’ returns home to open Skaneateles
360
Geraldean
Lantier is glad to be back where everyone knows her name.
Geraldean
recently opened Skaneateles 360, a boutique featuring women’s shoes and
essentials, in the Seitz Building in the space formerly occupied by the
Hitching Post.
Geraldean
grew up on local dairy farm and was the youngest of four daughters of a lifetime dairyman. After graduating from Onondaga High
School, , Geraldean enrolled at Skidmore College, where she had intended to
study art. Not long thereafter,
she changed her major to Geology and transferred to Syracuse.
A funny thing happened on her way to a career in
Geology. While studying for
a Master’s in geochemistry Geraldean got her first taste working in a boutique. Later, after graduating and
moving to Washington, D.C., where she worked on Capitol Hill, Geraldean again
worked nights in a D.C. area boutique.
She always thought it would be great to have her own shop some day.
Geraldean married Greg Lantier, an attorney, and the two
recently decided to relocate to this area. Her Realtor mentioned the Seitz Building and the rest, as
they say, is history.
After negotiating their lease with Jerery Gorelick, the
building’s new owner, Skaneateles 360 opened in August. Geraldean reports a strong start to the
business, despite having scaffolding block the street view for much of her
first eight months in business.
The store strives to offer women’s shoes and essentials
such as denim, handbags, jewelry, etc. that area residents would otherwise have
to shop for online.
Many have inquired about the name of the store. When trying to think of a name, she
consulted her former geology professor and mentor, Chris Schulz. He advised her that lake at its deepest
point is 360 feet deep, so she decided to name the store Skaneateles 360.
So far, Geraldean says she loves being her own boss and
is glad to be back in a small community after years in D.C.

Shelterbox
issues urgent appeal for emergency donations
ShelterBox has issued an
urgent appeal for funds to help provide aid to tens of thousands of displaced
people in four countries following a succession of humanitarian crises.
Response teams from
ShelterBox reacted quickly to distribute emergency aid to victims of the 29
October earthquake in Pakistan. And worsening humanitarian situations in the
Democratic Republic of the Congo, Honduras, and Swaziland have stretched
operations to the limit, ShelterBox representatives say.
In southwestern Pakistan, a
ShelterBox response team provided 1,000 containers to families left homeless
after a powerful earthquake rocked impoverished regions there, killing at least
215 people and causing widespread destruction.
Each container provides a
tent, a stove, a water purification kit, blankets, tools, and other necessities
to help a family of 10 survive for six months.
In Congo, an estimated
quarter-million people are seeking refuge from fierce fighting between rebels
and government forces. ShelterBox has provided 200 containers and has committed
to deliver 200 more.
A response team
also distributed 200 containers to residents of San Pedro Sula, Honduras, after
heavy rains and flooding forced 22,000 people from their homes on 22 October.
And a ShelterBox team in
Swaziland is distributing aid to children orphaned by AIDS in an ongoing
program with the National Emergency Response Council on HIV/AIDS.

Rotarians buy textbooks
to
Help Ohio School District
More than 800 students of the Trimble Local School District near
Athens, Ohio, USA, received thousands of textbooks in August, in part through a
gift from an unusual source: Indian Rotarians.
For nearly 18 years, Ram
Gawande, an Athens resident and RI District 6690 governor-elect, has been
involved in projects aimed at improving communities in his native Nagpur,
India.
After hearing of Gawande’s election as district
governor, Nagpur Rotarians decided to thank him for his years of support by
raising US$5,100 for a project that would benefit Athens. Gawande used the gift
to provide reading and math books to middle schools in the Trimble school
district, where 40 percent of families with children live below the
poverty level.
"This is a scenario of
the poor helping the poor," says Gawande, a member of the Rotary Club of Athens.
"Rotary in the United States has done a lot for the people of India, and
the people of India wanted to say thank you.” “We've become united under a
common mission of improving literacy."
