News & Notes

Rotary District 7150 is pleased to announce the birth of the District 7150 Books for the World project.

Thanks to the efforts of some very dedicated Rotarians, the support of the District Literacy committee and a community minded shipper, the project is now ready to bring the gift of books and literacy to the children of third world countries.

What is it? - Books for the World is designed to be collaborative effort between Rotary Clubs, their affiliated youth clubs, and other community and service organizations to provide surplus children’s K-6th grade picture/story and textbooks to regions in the world that are in need of these materials to create a opportunities for a better way of life. The initial focus and book shipments will go to the Rotary District 9300 Distribution Center in Johannesburg Republic of South Africa to be distributed to countries in the southern regions of Africa, where English is one of the primary business languages.

The “District 7150 Books for the World” committee provides each participating club with general book types and descriptions, packing materials (at cost) along with instructions and delivery information.  The books are to be delivered  to a central marshaling warehouse location in CNY (Lasertransit).

As boxed books are received they will be weighed, pelletized and wrapped for shipment to Rotary Books for the World located in Houston Texas. In the Houston location they will be combined and placed in containers with other donated books and shipped to Johannesburg.

Where are these books currently hiding? - Closets, book shelves, storage areas of homes, libraries, schools and churches, all looking for a home and children to read, learn from, love and cherish them. By combining our resources, we have give these books a fresh start, and make a significant difference in the life of the children of the world.

Rotary Clubs are asked to please share information about this project among themselves and with their your youth clubs (Rotaract, Interact, Early Act, Rotakid) and any other youth group and concerned organizations in your communities.

The Holiday Season is an excellent time to start the project, since it will give us an opportunity to share our gifts with the children of the world.

To learn more about the project, its logistics and costs, and the areas of Africa we are currently serving, visit the Web site at: http://www.d7150booksfortheworld.org/Home.html or call Ward Vuillemot directly.
