Morgan Stanley’s Randy Powers: Strategies to beat a down market
Just because the market is
experiencing a major downturn does not mean investors cannot make money.
So says Investment Advisor
Randy Powers, who recently opened a Morgan Stanley office in the Old Stone Mill
building. Randy lives on East Lake
Road with his wife and three children.
He previously maintained an office with A.G. Edwards in DeWitt for the
past 15 years. He left his
previous post just before Wachovia purchased A.G. Edwards.
The Skaneateles Morgan Stanely office features five seats and seeks to be a
high-end brokerage firm with experienced people. To show their commitment to the office, they executed a 10 year lease and recently completed a large investment
building out the space.
Randy offered several examples
of products investors can turn to in a down market
such as we are experiencing.
One such “structured product”
is a 100% protected absolute return barrier note. This market-neutral strategy generates a positive return for
investors as long as the market does not trade above or below a defined barrier
level at any time during the investment term. Such a note helps maintain investors’ desired exposure to
equities with limited risk, which is designed to potentially provide better long term returns than fixed-income investments or
cash.
Another product Randy
discussed involves yield enhancement strategies known as RevCons
(reverse convertibles). These are
short-term notes linked to the value of specific securities. They were created as alternatives to
direct investments
in single stocks.
Depending on the terms of the note, at maturity the investor
receives either 100% of the initial investment or a predetermined number of
shares of the underlying stock, in addition to a stated interest rate.
These
were just two of many strategies Mr. Powers says are
available to investors to cover against such bleak economic times.
For
more information contact Mr. Powers directly at 255-7701.
November:
time to celebrate works of Rotary Foundation
November is Rotary Foundation month and, time to
celebrate the many and varied accomplishments of the Rotary Foundation.
All Rotarians can take great
pride in the achievements of our Foundation, from our work for polio
eradication to our Rotary Centers for International Studies to projects that
improve lives every day. And now, we are building on those efforts through our
Future Vision Plan.
The Foundation’s
accomplishments extend beyond financial support. Rotarian doctors and dentists
are serving as volunteers to bring health care to remote, underserved areas of
the world.
Rotarian families also
welcome Ambassadorial Scholars and Group Study Exchange teams into their homes,
establishing lasting international friendships. And millions of children have
and will receive the precious polio vaccine during National Immunization Days
that Rotarians help organize, promote, and carry out with an eye on good
stewardship practices.
