Creamery prepares to set roots in expanded museum space

The Skaneateles Historical Society has outgrown its current space.  In the words of Architect Bob Eggleston, the Society is root-bound and needs to be transplanted to a bigger pot.

What began in the 1960s with a dozen or so people gathering information about Skaneateles’ history has evolved into one of Skaneateles primary cultural centers. The Society has grown so much that it had outgrown its museum space at the corner of Hannum and Kelley streets.

The Skaneateles Historical Society’s Creamery Museum is in the process of a major expansion that will provide additional space to enhance the display areas and provide additional space for community research and the gift shops.  Architect and Historical Society Member Bob Eggleston and Creamery Director Laurie Winship discussed the building’s history and future Thursday, October 23.

The Creamery building was built in 1899 as place for local farmers to pool their resources and sell their milk to New York City.  The building was later owned by an ice cream company and Borden Milk until the 1940s, when it became a storage facility and, over time, fell into a state of disrepair.

In the early 1990s, the Historical Society was offered the Creamery building and in 1992, thanks to the community efforts of time, talent and funding, the Creamery reopened as a museum and home for the Historical Society.  In addition to gathering extensive information regarding local homes and families, the Creamery features both permanent and changing displays including boats, carriage factories, farms, teasels, transportation and much more.

The Creamery has grown so much over the years that it have cannot take large items.  At one point, they were offered Skaneateles Lightning #1 but could not accept the donation because they had no place to display it.

This problem remained until a few years ago when the boiler building from the former Creamery building became available.  The Historical Society purchased the building and is in the process of converting it to new museum space.  The building will feature nearly as much space as the existing space and will have space to display a Lightning sailboat along with other large artifacts.

The Society had originally attempted to retain the original walls of the building but as the demolition process began, it became clear that the walls were not salvageable.  Just one of the original walls has been retained in the structure.

The new building is being funded through donations from members of the community.  They are three quarters of the way to their fund-raising goal but are still seeking donations.  For more information contact the museum at 685-1360.
