News & Notes

Sakal: Leadership is a Verb

Victoria, a junior at Skaneateles High School, presented a slide presentation of her experience at RYLA Thursday morning.

Rotary Youth Leadership Awards is Rotary’s leadership training program for young people ages 14-30.   RYLA emphasizes leadership, citizenship and personal growth and aims to: demonstrate Rotary’s respect for youth, provide an effective training experience for selected youth and potential leaders, encourage leadership of youth by youth and recognize publicly young people who are rendering service to their communities.

At RYLA, the students heard from a variety of speakers including area school administrators, Iraqi ware veterans and a ROTC commander covering topics related to leadership skills including setting and prioritizing goal, the role of technology, ethics and morals and communication skills.

Debbie Glisson, assistant principal at Marcellus High School offered a personality quiz to determine the students’ “true colors.”  Each student was assigned a color based on their personality type.  As the students continued through the weekend, they worked together on a variety of projects, including a ropes challenge course, building towers out of uncooked spaghetti strands and marshmallows, and building bookshelves.

The projects helped the students recognize each other’s strengths and weaknesses and how to work with different personality types to achieve a common goal.

As part of the weekend-long course, Victoria is required to complete a service project in the coming school year.  She is considering the Locks for Love program, a Common Sense Can and the Pennies for Polio program from our district.

Victoria enjoyed the weekend, in particular working with the different types of people.

Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign Seeks Bell Ringers

With the economy struggling, the Salvation Army has been experiencing more requests for assistance and is stretched to the limit.

The Salvation Army is requesting clubs that haven’t been bell ringers in the past to join the campaign and those that have been involved to consider increasing their hours if possible.

Four hours of coverage in kettle location can translate into meals for a week for a family of four!

The Salvation Army’s mission remains the same throughout the district – to meet human needs … without discrimination.
